Have tried pencil trick, pushing power button with all buttons and by self, and with adapter and batteries. Nothing. Did notice that only middle two batteries had contacts to the explorer and outer two don't. Why would you need 4 batteries when only 2 connect to machine. Could someone with an explorer look at yours and tell me how many you have on your's?
SOURCE: Batman Leapster Cartridge broken?
Take the cartridge out of the Leapster, blow into the opening with your mouth. Do the same with the Leapster (blow into it). Insert the cartridge and see if that works.
SOURCE: The volume button doesn't work
I had same problem, just fixed it by a little hack. The volume up switch is broken.
1. Remove accessory door on bottom.
2. Remove all screws on back.
3. Open back cover.
Looking at the exposed board, there are 2 volume switches (back to back). Directly next the switches are four contacts: the upper 2 are for volume down, the lower 2 are for volume up.
4. Place the battery pack on the board and hold it down.
5. Press the power button to turn on the unit.
6. Use a small wire to jump the volume up contacts multiple times to change the volume to maximum (or desired level).
7. (Optional) Remove the volume buttons and throw away the rubber cushions to prevent the volume from changing.
8. Replace everything back in place.

SOURCE: How do I get the battery compartment open on the Leapster GS Explorer?
To open the battery compartments firmly press down on the arrows with your thumbs and push it out. You should feel the cover unlatching as you firmly press down and out.
This will give you the PARENT SETTINGS menu.
You will need to start them from scratch to choose a new pet. It is sad but at current it is the only way to choose a new pet.
