Garmin Nuvi 660 internal speakers

My internal speakers do not work. I can hear fine using the FM frequency option but no sound at all when I select internal speakers. My Garmin nuvi 350's speaker becomes garbled (cannot discern what the voice is saying) recently. It's been used only a little over a year.

Garmin Nuvi 610- working perfectly then sudden crackling and now loss of sound/or at best crackly and intermiitent sound- but map/navigation and on-screen directions fine

Check the audio output setting on the nuvi. There is a possibility that the FM Transmitter setting has been turned on or that the device has been muted.
To check the audio output setting:
  1. Touch the Speaker icon below the Wrench icon.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, touch Audio Output.
  3. Make sure that the Internal Speaker is selected and touch OK (660, 670, 680, and 5000 models only).
  4. Make sure that the MUTE box does not have a check mark in it. If it does, touch the box to clear the selection.
  5. Make sure the volume level is at a reasonable percent level.

Everything works fine on the unit no problem until

3. If your Nuvi has a FM transmitter, is it selected to "FM" or "Speaker"? The "FM" setting will mute the internal speaker. Setting it to "Speaker" will send sound to the speaker.

if this side of it works then the FM transmitter is faulty

Check that the sound has not been MUTED

plug the earphone into the socket to see if any sound is heard. The socket is also a switch that takes sound from internal speaker to ephone and reverse.
If no sound is hear in either FM or normal mode your unit is faulty and needs repair

No sound from Garmin nuvi 760 by any method

Sounds like your speaker went south. Since your fm transmitter is working I'll be your earphone jack is too. So you could always use an earphone. Only other option is a speaker replacement.

No sound!

If you can hear audio through the headphone jack but not the internal speaker jack, then the speaker is bad.

This is a problem I have seen many times before. I will be posting an article soon on how to replace the internal speaker, however this is not a repair that just anyone can do.

You have to have skills in dissassembly & soldering.

GARMIN NUVI 350

HI Heather,

Make sure you don't have the sound muted. Have you tried plugging in a set of headphones into the headphone jack? If you can hear sound with the headphones, most likely, the internal speakers have failed. If you still can't hear any sound, the audio output stage on the motherboard has failed. In either case, you will need to send the unit back for repair. Be sure to have your serial number handy. Register it online https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/register.htm
if you haven't already done so.

More Info: If you can hear sound through the speakers and don't want to send the unit back for repair, you can buy a FM transmitter at Best Buy - the kind that will allow you to play a portable CD player through your car stereo. Just plug the transmitter's audio input cable into your GPS headphone jack, power the transmitter with your car lighter jack, set the transmitter frequency to a unsued FM channel and tune your car stereo to tha same channel. You should hear your GPS through your FM stereo.

Good Luck,

Garmin Nuvi 660 - how do I get FM Transmitter firmware

I believe in your location it comes as an option. transmitter is an optional module. You can browse the user manual at following link (PDF file) http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1262_OwnersManual.pdf
You can see at 35th page, simple instructions have been given for FM transmitter settings.

If it doesn't work please contact to the Manufacturer. I couldn't find Garmin's Ireland number. However you may call UK number +44-870-8501242. Or simple you call your reseller.

Good Luck
