We put the game disc into the ps3 and it makes a weird grinding noise and it wont pop up the game disc icon at all.
Make sure that you do not have the PS3 on it's side. Lay it flat. Insert a MOVIE DVD first and see if it will recognize the disc.
If you continue to hear a grinding sound when the ps3 is laying down that could only mean one thing, you need a replacement drive.
Dont forget to Always update your Playstation to the newest firmware.

sounds to me like your fan is on the way out and the bearings are seizing up.
if its in warrently please give sony a ring,

Sadly there currently is no fix for this problem. I've also had this same problem and contacted Sony about it.
You need to send it in to them to get it serviced. You can do this at:

If your warrenty has expired it will cost around $180.
