Just bought a new Briggs and Stratton 5500 StormResponder generator 3 days ago. Filled with gas, made sure oil was full-- cranked and ran for 20 - 30 mins and shut off (didn't shut off fuel valve). Tried to crank today, seemed like engine seized. Removed oil fill cap and gasoline came pouring out (I did shut the fuel valve now). What would have caused a brand new motor to fill the crankcase with fuel, and how can I ensure its all out?
Fuel from the fuel tank flows to the carburetor and then on into the engine cylinders. From there it seeps into the crank case.
It's a matter of gravity. The gas will seep until it reaches the lowest point in the engine.
There are two methods of correcting this dangerous problem.
1) When you are done using the engine you can turn it upside down, over a large container that is of sufficient size to contain all the gas and oil that will run out of the engine.
or
2) Turn the fuel valve to it's OFF position when you are done running the engine. This stops the fuel from seeping into the crank case from the carburetor.
(And a heads up from one who has personal, first hand experience. Be sure to OPEN the fuel shut off valve when you think you would like to start the engine.)
If you should have this happen again DO NOT try to start the engine!
(That's one of the reasons The Da always said, "Did you check the oil before you started that engine?")
Dump out all of the oil that has been contaminated with fuel and replace it with fresh oil.

Probably about 750cc / near 3/4 of a quart. Make sure generator is on level surface, add oil in small amounts and check using dipstick until shows full.

the gen head will need to be removed if it in on that side and the flywheel side should be done as well the seals can be purchased from any auto parts store with using the numbers off the seal some engines need to be split do to the seal needs to enter from the inside side if this is the case reseal the hole engine i suggest you get a small engine repair manual or the manual for your unit this will be a involved undertaking removing the gen head can be tedious and special tools will be required so no damage to it hope this helps

Hello, I would not advise you to adjust the speed without a frequency meter. for 220 volt operation, you will have to use the twist - lock receptacles and not use the neutral in the receptacle. This means one of the generator's hot leads is going to be the neutral in your system. The frame of the generator may be connected to the neutral of the generator, so be careful so that you do not receive an electrical shock. The voltage is adjusted within the receptacle box. There might be a small hole on the right side of the receptacle box that you can insert a small blade screwdriver into to make the voltage adjustment. You do not need to change this much to change the voltage. Now, the frequency is adjusted by a self-locking nut located under the air cleaner right side, when facing the engine. There is a spring on this nut / bolt assembly. I think it is a 5/16 nutdriver or socket that you need for this. Turn counter clockwise 1/8 of a turn. This will slow down the generator to about 50 - 55 hz. This is okay if you are running at around 52 hz. As the generator loads, the rpm will drop down. A frequency meter would be great to use here, as a too low rpm could burn out electrical motors and other equipment that you are using. Hello; The Briggs engine front case is shaped to accommodate the internal mounting of the Alternator section. A service manual for this model would be very helpful. I believe you need to dismantle the back of the Alternator where the outlets are and then the outer case with the stator windings in it. This will leave the rotor ( the long shaft with windings on it ) which will be attached to the output shaft of the engine by some coupling device the you must dismantle. John

Hello, probably a really good guess is 2 1/2 to 3 gals. Oil type I would use cleaing additive multi-temperatur 10/15 or 10/20 well know brank. Synethic oil I don't know how well does it work in an air cool engine. GB...stewbison
