I turn it on, select a song, activate a track for recording (button is flashing red), press play, and then hit the record button and the red light is on. I play my guitar and the meters on the display screen go up. i stop the recording and playback to find nothingthis. why?
You may need to assign one of the inputs (a or b) to the track you want to record to. Do this by first pressing the 'Assign A' or 'Assign B' (if you are lining in a guitar to the Hi-Z input then you'll be using 'Assign A') and then press the record/select button for the track to assign. Yes you certainly can record the 8 inputs onto 8 tracks simultaneously. You will need to make sure you are assigning each input to each track individually by first pressing the input button for an input and then pressing the select button for a track. Do this for each input/track and then make sure all of the 8 tracks you want to record to are armed for recording (the red rec buttons above each should be lit) before pressing record and play together.
You might want to insure that no tracks are linked (you can see this by pressing an input and observing which tracks have their 'select' button flashing). If 2 adjacent ones are flashing for the same input simply unassign one of them by pressing the 'select' button above that track. Then you'll be free to assign the next input to that track as above.
It happens all the time to me. Only solution is to save constantly as you record because once it freezes up and says not stopped you can only unplug and plug back in then turn power on. You will lose what you were recording but nothing will be lost that you have saved.
First you'll need to know if your mic is dynamic or requires phantom power. The DP-01 does not provide phantom power, but the DP-01FX and the DP01-FX/CD units have the option of turning on phantom power for their two XRL mic jacks. The DP-01 simply has 1/4" jacks for mics. Typically if your mic comes with a 1/4" plug it will be dynamic, but that isn't always true.
Plug it into the mic/line jack in the front of the unit and turn up the input volume knob. Then depending on which of the two inputs you used you'll have to press the Assign button (A or B) and then the rec button over one of the tracks and turn up the track fader. You'll also need to insure that the master fader is turned up and you should then be able to see the meters moving when speaking into the mic and hear the output in your headphones.
To record simply press the rec button on the assigned track again (it will light steady) to arm the track for recording and press the play and record together.
It sounds like either the inputs are not assigned or the tracks are not armed for recording (or both).
Here is a quick explanation of the procedure involved in recording with the DP-02 that I posted for another person who was asking for some basic instruction on how to record. You might be missing a step somewhere along the line as for instance you will still see the meters move even if you don't have the inputs assigned or don't have any tracks armed, but the DP-02 won't record anything until you do both.
To record you need to first assign your input to a track, then arm the track for recording, and then press play + record at the same time.
1. So you would patch your mixer output, mic or instrument into an input on your DP01 (say input A). You can run some audio to set the level with the input level knob (located next to input A on the front panel).
2. Then to assign that input to a track simply press and hold the 'input A' button and then press the 'rec' button of the track you with to record on. The 'rec' button will flash rapidly to indicate that the input is assigned to the track.
(To assign the input to a different track you have to clear the input assignment from the first track and assign the input to a new track. To clear an assignment press the input assign key, A in this case, and the track it's assigned to will flash its 'rec' button. Hold down the input assign key and then press the flashing 'rec' button. The button will stop flashing and the input can then be assigned to another track by following step 2 again).
3. Next, to arm the track for recording simply press the 'rec' button for that track. The 'rec' button with flash slowly.
4. To begin recording press play + record together in the transport section and the 'rec' light for the armed track will stop flashing and light steadily. Press 'stop' to end recording.
This should get you started. The operation of the DP02 is actually pretty intuitive once you've gone through it a couple of times (which is one of the real strengths of the unit). You'll be multitracking like an expert in no time.
The fuzz/white noise is a little confusing and it seems to be saying that you are recording something vs trying to record incorrectly and getting nothing at all. Anyway, despite that, I would try going over your recording steps first.
First off make sure your Hi-Z input is not set to the Hi-Z or guitar setting. It is possible your that MicroKorg is overloading the input and distorting. You should however have heard that in the headphones too, so I'm not so sure that's the problem. The next thing to check is to make sure your input is assigned to the track you expect to be recording on. (Press the input's button to check this. The select/record button over the track should flash).
Next make sure your track is armed for recording before you press 'play+record' (Record button above the track should light steady when recording).
You'll first need to find some aux audio out jacks on your karaoke machine. You might need an adapter, but the basic idea will be to connect the aux out from the karaoke machine to an input on your Tascam DP-02.
Then on the DP-02 you need to assign whatever input your plugged into to one of the 8 tracks. Let's say you're using the left input (input A) and want to put the karaoke music on track 1. You'll press the 'Assign A' button on the DP-02 and while holding it then press the 'Rec' button of track 1. The 'Rec' button will flash rapidly to show its been assigned. (for reference: assigning an input is better described on page 23 of the manual). Then you'll want to arm track 1 to record. Press the 'rec' button for track 1 and it will start to flash slowly to show it has been armed for recording. Now you are ready to start recording. On the DP-02 press the large round play and record buttons on the lower right together to start recording and start your karioke machine playing. When the song is done press stop on the DP-02.
Now to record your vocals you'll need your mic to be plugged in (lets' say it's in input B). You'll need to assign this input to a free track (track 2). Press the 'Assign B' button and while holding it press the 'Rec' button for track 2 (rec button will flash rapidly). Then you'll want to un-arm track 1 and arm track 2 for recording. To do this press the 'rec' button for track 1 so that the light goes off and then press the 'rec' button for track 2 so that it flashes slowly.
So now when you press play and record together to record, you'll hear track 1 playing (the karaoke track you recorded earlier) and you'll be recording vox on track 2. Of course you'll also be recording whatever you hear in the room onto track 2 along with your singing, so in order to get a clean recording there (prevent bleed) you'll want to plug some headphones into the DP-02 and listen to those as you record.
That's pretty much all there is to it. Some variations if you wish to record the karioke in stereo vs mono (I gave you the instructions for mono here), and you may need to turn on phantom power if you have a non-powered mic, but the idea is basically the same.

You've got two inputs on the DP-02 so you can record two sources at once.
Depending on how you want the electric guitar recorded (mic the amp, or direct line in) you can in the first case plug your guitar mic into one of the mic inputs on DP02 and plug your vocal mic into the other mic input. You also have the option of plugging the guitar directly into the DP02 (using the hi-z input - I believe it is labelled 'guitar' or something on the DP02. I any event I believe it's the one on the left). This way you only need one mic for use recording the vocal part.
To avoid any 'bleed' between channels you can use the headphones while recording this way and you'll avoid having the unamplified guitar sound coming through over the vocal mic.
Once you have the mics or guitar and mic plugged into two inputs, you need to assign the inputs to a channel (track) to record on. You do this by pressing the select button for the input and then pressing the select button for the track where you want to record the input. Do this for both inputs so that they are recording on different tracks. Then arm the tracks for recording by pressing the record button for each track and the lighted buttons will flash above each armed track. Then just press play and record and you'll be recording. You can go back and redo it as many times as you like and record over what is there, or preserve a take and assign a new track (or tracks) for another take. You've got 8 to play with.
