It's a known failure on the XBOX 360 and Microsoft will cover it even after the device has gone out of warranty.

...the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007. We have already made improvements to the console that will reduce the likelihood of an occurrence of this issue. The E74 error happens as the scaler chip that deals with all the display, you will need to stop the heat build up, you can do this yourself or you can send it in for repair.

How may red lights are flashing?

1 red light normally E74 error message on screen

2 red lights overheating

3 red lights the GPU and the CPU have overheated.

An E74 error is when the lower-right quadrant of the ring piece indicator flashes red and displays an error message in multiple languages: "E74 System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support". The error is caused when there's a video problem with the Xbox's hardware scaler chip being damaged. As of April 14, 2009, the E74 error is now covered by the three-year extended warranty.

E74 can only be caused by either the HDD or the console itself,so you might wanna try using a different HDD with your console, if the issue still persists, then most probably, the console is having a hardware failure,there is a possibility that the HDD PORT is not properly woking w/c is causing the e74 error.

if thats the case, try calling xbox support hotline(1-800-4-MYXBOX) to process a repair for the console,it will be free,because Microsoft is extending the warranty of the consoles for 3yrs from the date of purchase for e74 and 3red light issues.

The cause of E-74 with one red light Error might be overheating of your console and for avoiding such error in future you need to put your machine at an open space. Ensure that it is placed near the window or you can also make some external arrangement for cooling of console such as cooling the machine through a pedestal fan.
