My compaq cq50 laptop has been stolen can it be blocked or traced i think i know who has it but no proof,i still have box, paperwork, receipt,i also have backup discs.the police said i should talk to a solicitor but that will cost money i havnt got it has all my work docs bank info card details, invoices etc.
You are on shaky legal grounds, unless you have proof that it is your computer and have grounds to have a search for your personal information on that computer. That person could have also wiped the computer clean and reinstalled the Windows operating system.
I suggest you monitor your financial affairs closely to see if there are any unauthorized access to your accounts and credit cards, then you will have grounds for fraud investigation.
I think you should have a talk with a solicitor, this could be the least cost in the long run, especially if you have banking details on your computer.
When you get a new computer or your one back, you can protect the information on your computer and hard disk by placing a Power on Password on the laptop and a Password on the hard disk.
This will prevent unauthorized access to the laptop and hard disk. Even if the hard disk is removed and placed into another laptop, the data is locked and cannot be retrieved without the password.
These password should be recorded and placed in a safe place because if forgotten there are no backdoor passwords available.
Best of luck, I hope thinks turn out OK for you.
