Hi Elizabethfam

If not removed safely, external devices can lose information when disconnected.

I recommend using a free recovery tool called Handy Recovery which is normally used to recover files accidentally files on a PC. The application can also be used to try and recover files on your external HD.

Handy recovery: http://www.handyrecovery.com/download.shtml (look for the small button near the bottom that says 'Freeware')

Good luck!

Why is my files on my external hard drive in my computer the space volume is the color red instead of blue

When the volume information has turned Red instead of Blue, it's because the drive has less that 15% capacity left, files will be read faster when there is a minimum of 15% free storage on a drive.

Did you try switching the USB port that you plug your unit into? This could help. You may need to reinstall the WD provided software. I believe it is available from their website if you don't have the CD anymore.

230 gb drive with 100gb used and only 70gb of free space showing

please check if the files are hidden. just go to the explorer -> tools -> folder option -> view tab -> then on the Advance Settings click the Show Hidden Files and Folders. then try to navigate your external hard drive.

I cannot create new folders on my external HD

If the explorer shows you have some space left and can not create any file or folder, it might be because of heavily fragmented drive. try defragmenting thr drive using any application. I usually use O&O defrag .

Not enough free disk space error

I saw that my drive was FAT32 and my machine is NTFS, wasn't sure that could be the issue until you replied advising the 4gb restriction. Does not make sense i transferd 4gb before, but none the less I reformatted the drive to NTFS and my file transfered just fine.
Thank you for your input.
