Replace insulation in Kenmore stove

I have a Kenmore 79012 gas stove that has been infested by mice. We have new insulation to put in, but can't find instructions on how to take the oven apart to do that. Can someone help?

Oops -- actual model number is 790.7233. I'm hoping someone can help. The oven is unusable due to the smell and Christmas is coming fast.

These are usually easy enough to take apart if you have have a well lit large room to work in, and take photos of what you remove as you go along.

First get it in a space where you can walk around it. Remove all SMALL screws from the back and wiggle panels as you go to see where they loosen and are still fixed by other screws. Take a sequence of digital camera pics as you go. You are trying to replace the insulation in the back and sides so you only need to remove the outer panels, not take the whole thing apart.

SOURCE: Kenmore Oven Problem

the ignitor has to be on before the gas valve opens up and until the stove recognizes a flame, if it doesnt the gas will shut off and the ignitor will cool off, If you use the self clean setting to clean the oven you will destroy the ignitor much faster because they are only rated for about 1000 degreese for just a minute and self clean keeps it around 800 for an hour or so. You may just need to replace the ignitor.

SOURCE: Kenmore gas stove, broiler works but oven won't

Hello, I'll start by saying this may sound odd considering the info you provided, "ignitor glows...". It is actually the ignitor you'll need to replace. Being that I do service for sears I've replaced numerous ignitor's, both bake & broil, but bake being most common as it is typically used more frequently. I'll try to explain... The simpliest way to put it is this, the hot surface ignitors function like a large resistor. As the ignitor glows it reaches a value to allow the gas valve to open and lite the burner. If the ignitor is even slightly worn/off it won't ignite the burner, hence it need's to be replaced. Hope that help's explain what & why. If so please take a second to rate the solution I provided here at fixya. Good luck and thanks for visiting fixya. Macmarkus :)

SOURCE: kenmore gas range, oven touchpad and clock are out

It appears your ERC/CLOCK has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question.

I have a small, 4-burner gas stove; no wondow in the oven door. I think my stove had a mouse infestation. I think the insulation above the oven has mouse urine in it; I can smell it, although there is no...

It is common for mice to get into the oven box insulation and nest. I had this problem before and its not likely you'll be able to get rid of the odor without replacing the insulation. Another issue is any fecal matter the mice leave behind. This can become a health hazard (expecially in an appliance that you use to prepare food). I would recommend replacing the insulation. If the model oven is correct, the insulation can be purchased for around $20 at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The part number will depend upon your COMPLETE model number (located on a nameplate around the oven door opening, or lower drawer opening (if equipped). On some models, the model number will appear on the back of the operator console. The first three sites on the list include exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly indentifying any parts you may need. The insulation for the Magic Chef 31000 series is listed under the "Body" parts list.

To replace the insulation on MOST ranges, all you should have to do is lift the range top to access the oven box. The top on most ranges can be lifted by removing a series of screws that are usually holding it secure under the bottom of the front edge. You will need to open the oven door to see them. CAUTION: Do not lean on the oven door as this may cause damage to the door hinges and springs.

On the Magic Chef 31000 series, it appears that you will need to remove the burner control knobs, followed by screws holding the burner control control panel in place. You should also remove all the orifice covers and burner grates from the top of the range. Once the burner control is removed, remove the top panel, followed by the burner box top panel. The insulation will be wrapped around the oven box. It should just lift out. Depending on the potential infestation, you may want to wear a dust mask and use a vaccum to **** up any loose debris. CAUTION: Turn off the gas supply BEFORE attempting any repairs - if this is a gas range.

If you have questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Uneven baking and noises and strange smell coming from oven but so far the oven does work and gets to temp...

here is my guess from experience. If you have dogs or cats.... I have seen stoves where a rodent(mouse and or rat, chipmunk, squirrel) has decided the stove was a god place to store a winter supply of food. The insulation was dug out and replaced with the animal feed and or acorns and nuts. This creates a weak area of insulation and the odor you describe. I hope not but a surface thermometer can be used to locate the area of concern so you do not have to dismantle the whole unit looking for the cause. Find the warmest area during bakeing and look there first.
