Brother MFC-640CW Replaced Black catridge becomes empty

I replaced the black catridge with Office Depot made compatible catridge and it drained very quickly.  Is this a known issue? Not sure where all that ink has gone; I just printed three test pages. Please help.

Thank you for providing the solution. I apologize for not rating the solution sooner. I did not get a chance to replace the Black catridge until yesterday. This time I have LC41BK from Brother, but I still have the same draining problem. When I first inserted the Catridge, the printer's ink status showed full ink level for black, but did not print when I selected copy and print in black. So, I pressed the catridge a little bit into the catridge holder. That fixed the printing in black colour issue, but the ink drained in about 4 to 5 hiurs. Not sure if pressing it in could cause the draining. I am going to open up the printer and clean the assy as Mix-it-up has suggested. I will keep you guys posted. I am also considering to get rid off brother printer and go for HP or some other brand.

Compatible carts do make a lot of trouble. One point is the draining! The ink has flown into the cart assy and beyond that to the bottom of the printer. As long as you can print without problems you dont have to do anything. If the test pages wont show the correct color you have to open the printer and to clean the assy and the bottom.

Do use original ink carts though these wont drain and give correct info to printer. You can very simple refill them with dye ink. Dye ink only!!!

OK. You need a new ink assy as a spare part because the foil which builts the ground leaks and let the ink pour out. Unfortunatly you cant fix the assy.

I have a brother fax machine model 2480c, just want to know for the ink catridge, do i need full ink in the entire 4 catridge in order for the printer to work OR i can just have say the black colour...

1) The Brother printer is structured in such a way that it will stop all the printing operations if any one of the ink cartridges are empty.

2) If the printer continues printing inspite of having anyone empty cartridge then the cleaning cycles would suck air from the empty cartridge.

3) This would damage the print head.
However, the black and white print mode can operate exceptionally well when the cartridges are empty.

Brother mfc-240c

The digital display on the printer will tell you which color is low and when it needs to be replaced, either black, magenta, cyan, or yellow.

Replace black ink in brother mfc-465 inkjet & now it won't print

are you using brother oem ink? you ,may check and see if the seal is still on the cartridge, if not try and take a paper clip and insert it in to the air hole on the catridge, some times it gets clogged up. brother tech

Brother MFC-210C does not reset after ink is replaced

The usual obvious fix is to buy a new catridge, insert, power off machine, then switch back on to reset any sensors. But if the circuitry on the machine itself is faulty it wont fix it.

I used to own an MFC 260C. It had a perfectly good full ink catridge in it, that was working fine, until...it suddenly did not recognise the cartridge anymore.

I pulled the machine apart and found that 2 of the 4 sensors on the cct board at the back of the cartridge housing were loose. These sensors pass light through the exposed part of the cartridge to see if ink is there. So if these are faulty, you will never clear the "No Cartridge" or "Ink Empty..." or "Near Empty Ink ..." messages on the MFC260C and probably other similar printers in the MFC range.

Why did they fail? Because the soldering on these sensors was poor quality.

I would never buy another Brother machine because of this, also because they design the machine to be totally useless unless all the ink ccartridges are full. Shame on you Brother, and kiss my *** for the $160 pile of junk I bought off you that was only on its second batch of cartridges (ie very little use)
