this may be beaculse of updating to IOS 4.something...it IS a hardware problem if so and you should be able to get a replacement even if it is out of warranty ( I did ! )
I would do a soft reset holding down Left Alt, Right Shift and Delete keys - simultaneously for a couple of seconds. That should clear anything that may be causing a memory issue...
Switching itself off... The above reset should resolve this, or show a bigger issue...
Crackling line though suggests a little more... Is this intermittent or on all calls?
