Pick up a can of electrical contact cleaner in an aerosol can at the auto parts store.Pull out the cartridges, and carefully hit each nozzle in the head with a short blast (use snorkel on the spray can). No reset, no nothing, just turn it back on and print.

SOURCE: Ink System Failure with error code: 0xc05d1281 BEWARE SPAMMERS AT v1-800-532-4187

I had the same problem and took Guru NinaE advice....1. Unplug power cord from back of printer while it is on. 2. Wait for 60 seconds after it is in sleep mode. 3. Press and hold "Print Photos" and "Red Eye Removal" at the same time and while holding the two buttons down, plug in the power cord into the back of the printer. 4. The printer display should go blank or Reset might show up on the display. When this happens, touch the ON button and the printer will reset itself.

------------- solution 2 ----------------------------------
HP C5180 All-In-One Printer HARD RESET:
Hold down HELP + OK button and unplug printer
Hold down HELP + OK button again as you plug the printer back in.
Then power it on, if it doesn’t power on automatically.
Be Safe: keep holding the buttons until the printer turns itself off. (It took mine less than a minute.)
Now you can release the buttons and simply power it back on.
I got an error message about “improper shut down” since I unplugged it w/out powering down. After I clicked “OK” the printer was just fine and didn’t mind anymore. And now I can print.

SOURCE: hp photosmart 3200 all in one ink system failure

I know this sounds crazy but I did this and others have too, it worked. Hold down four buttons at the same time ( OK, Cancel, Black , Color ) and turn the power off. Note: I figured out how to hold the 4 keys down with one hand and push the on/off switch at the same time. Once you power the printer back up is will take a few minutes to go through maintenance. Then it will “hopefully” go back to normal. I did this 2x’s. HP gives you a procedure that doesn't work! They just want to make money off fixing it every 6 months. They are in the service, repair and “ink business” not printer manufacturing.

Can you use black only in hp officejet 6700 rather than all the cartridges

Hello, Lisa -

You can choose to print in black only. However, the black print will use not only the ink from the black ink cartridge but it will also draw from the 3 other color ink cartridges.

Bottom line: You will need sufficient ink in all ink cartridges even to print in black only.

Please read your HP 6700 user's manual, starting on page 74 of the manual.

In case you do not have the user's manual for your printer, this is the link so you can download and save the PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader software, free) version of the manual:

How do i clean the printhead of hp officejet 6700 premium

Using the HP Printer Assistant (comes with the driver package), choose the Estimate Ink Levels Option. At the top of this page, select the Device Services Tab. There is a Clean Printheads Option there. Be advised this goes thru some serious ink. I have a 6700 myself and am so disgusted with the ink usage rate that I have purchased a different printer for actual printing. I only the the 6700 for scanning and faxing.
