System power won't shut down when Windows shuts down.
HP will not power down when windows shuts down. System stays powered on. This happened after installing Windows XP on my parents pc. In order to start up the pc, the power switch has to be held in for several seconds to power down the pc then press the power switch to start it back up. Is there a driver for some relay that needs to be installed to make the system shut down when windows shuts down?
Thanks.

If your HP computer refuses to power down, this means that there are still programs open that Windows can't close. Normally when you select the "Shut Down" button from your "Start" menu, Windows closes all open programs, then closes itself, and your basic input/output system (BIOS) turns off all of your hardware. If Windows can't close all open programs, your computer won't be able to power off. This means that you must close these programs yourself.
Right-click on the window of an open program on your Windows taskbar (Bottom of Screen) Click "Close Window." Windows manually closes the program. If a window appears on-screen indicating that Windows cannot get the program to close, click the "Force Close" button in this window to have Windows force the program to shut down. Repeat "Step 1" for any additional programs that are open on your computer. Click "Start." Click "Shut Down." Hope this helps.
the power outages may have destroyed a part in the pc or corrupted somthing on the hard drive....try to turn it off before windows starts booting if it shuts down fine its your hard drive which means you may need to reinstall windows
Hold the power button in for a few seconds it will shut down. Then unplug system and push the power button down with it unplugged then replug it in and power up again. Then do a proper shut down again to see if the problem fixed. I hope this assisted you. John
You should never power down by pressing the power button unless your system is deadlocked and won't respond to any other actions. Powering off in this fashion can cause you to lose data, corrupt files, and improperly shut down Windows.
Nonetheless, if you are in need of shutting down the laptop in this fashion you must hold the power button instead of only pressing it. You'll find this in the power settings of the device. Honestly, the power button may even be set to do nothing, which is possible.
To properly shut down your new Pavilion laptop, which should be running Windows 7, follow this process: Click Start > Shut Down
Start is now simply a circular Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and shut down has an arrow pointing down next to it. Click the words shut down instead of the arrow which will bring up other power save options.
dude i think its the BIOS prob try reseting the bios u can do so by removing the maotherboard battary for one min aand then replacing it this will surely rester the bios.this should it
Hi, You will need to enable the Advance power management in Bios and on windows.. Try to see in the bios the advance setting for APM. Some motherboard you have to enable this. Other its simply on windows. After the installation of windows Go >Right click desktop>properties>then select screen saver tab>below click power> Then click APM tab enable and restart May be this can solve this issues. Or else I would advice to change the power supply and see. Regards uttam
