I bought a new GE Spacemaker (with exhaust fan) about 2 and a half years ago. i've had no problems until yesterday when it suddenly died. No display characters, nada. i can see a tiny yellow (non LED) light behind the display, but no buttons will respond. The door seems to latch OK. I unplugged and replugged, leaving it off for like an hour in between. Still nothing. I checked that outlet and it works just fine with another appliance.
From what I gather, it is most likely the fuse??? However, the same sites that indicate that, say no homeowner should ever, ever, ever try to replace the fuse. I'm not even sure that's what it is, but if there's any way I can buy the $5 fuse and swap it out to see before pulling the whole thing out and paying hundreds for repair/replacement, I'm all for it.
Suggestions?
A microwave can be dead for many reasons. If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the thermostat to open. When it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again. If it's random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or fuse holder. If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor. If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer. If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven. Thank you so very much- that's great info and I'm very happy to have the links. The fuse didn't fix it. It was working one minute, the next we went to put something in it and noticed it was dead in the water. Hasn't done a thing since, except that tiny light behind the keypad (no green letters, just a tiny bulb back there). I think the rest of that stuff may be over my head. But THANK YOU!
my spacemaker xl1800 is doing the same thing. it acts "sluggish" buts still heats. if i try to use it for more than 4/5 minutes, it just cuts off and will eventually come back on. i remodeled my kitchen about 27 months ago and chose ge for the reputation and style. i guess i made a mistake. is this something i can possibly fix or do i need a new one? this one cost over $500 and my kitchen cabinets are custom to fit this microwave.
