My kenmore 385 won't feed fabric

One minute my Kenmore 385 1884180 was humming along, the next second the feed dogs would no longer feed the fabric along. I've cleaned out the bobbin area and feed dogs, nothing. Any ideas? I just recently bought a used Kenmore 385 1764180, and although it seemed to work at the previous owners house, once I set it up at my place and tried to use it, the feed dogs weren't pulling the fabric through. I took a good, close look, and although they move up and down (and seem to be in the proper position), they don't move back and forth at all. Someone suggested that the feed dogs might be in the dropped position for darning, but I have search the machine, and can't even find a lever or button or switch for that option, and anyway, the feed dogs ARE coming up above the plate. Just wondering if anyone can help me.

Check to see what pattern is selected. Be sure it isn't the buttonhole.Select straight stitch.Move the stitch length setting to 4.Turn the handwheel and see if the feed dogs move forward. Press the reverse lever and see if they move backwards. Select straight stretch stitch and turn the wheel to see if the feed dogs move forward and backward.Check the presser foot release on top of the machine and make sure there is pressure on the foot.
Sometimes the reverse assembly on this machine stops working because it has the wrong type of grease on it and it turns into a hard gummy mess that won't let it work.

Have Kenmore 385 1264. suddenly stopped moving material throught. Was using a lite weight material. Won't go forward, or back. Change stitch length, tension, cleaned bobbin area, needles check under feed dogs. Change to duck material- no problem. Forward and back. Could my feed dogs need to be replaced?

My kenmore sewing machine will no longer feed fabric through. It was working fine all day til now.

Since we don't know what model it is, we're pretty limited on suggestions. Check to make sure the feed dogs have not been accidentally lowered for darning.

How to lower the feed dogs for free motion sewing on model # 16782

There are most likely some numbers missing from the model number you provided. Usually, there is a 3-digit beginning number, ie 115, 385, 401...

I am unable to find model information based on your number, but you can most likely get a user's manual through Sears or try searching the internet (Make Model manual), ie:

Kenmore Sewing Machine Manuals Instruction and Repair Manuals

Sewing machines generally have two ways to disable feed dogs. One way is a lever or knob on the machine itself that physically "drops" the feed dogs so they are below the needleplate. The feed dogs will continue to operate but since they are below the sewing surface, they will not have an effect on the fabric movement. The other way is an accessory that attaches to the needleplate which covers the feed dogs and creates a flat sewing surface.

Another item that is important for free motion quilting is a darning foot or free motion foot. These presser feet are physically shorter in height than a standard presser foot. This means the darning foot, when lowered, does not apply "pressure" to the fabric when it is lowered. It, instead, provides leeway between the presser foot and the fabric so there is room to manually maneuver the fabric while stitching.

You'll just need to CONFIRM that the presser foot shank is correct for your machine (low shank, high shank, slant shank).

There are probably a multitude of designs available for your machine, either Kenmore or generic brands. Once you've determined your machine's shank, it would be a personal decision as to the design you'd prefer, which could be metal or plastic, closed, open, or clear see-thru as well as various shapes, round, oval, etc. There are also some feet that are spring-loaded so they "hop" while you stitch, or feet that are solid.

These are examples of different darning/free motion presser feet.

Feed dog lever not working on my Kenmore 385 24 stitch machine

I surfed around this site for various suggestions, finally took the bottom plate off and cleaned and oiled all the parts along that rod that goes right across (think it's a drive bar that rotates). Ran the machine without thread in for a few minutes to let the oil soak in. Machine now works fine.

Feed dog not pulling fabric

First, remove the needle plate and using a small screwdriver, clean the packed lint from in between the teeth. This will allow the teeth to go up.
