When I turn on tv the screen flashes for a split second then goes pitch black, although I still have sound. Someone has metioned that this could be a "backlight" issues - is this an expensice repair.

Depending on your electronics skill, they can be replaced with new replacement boards. Usually the inverter boards that drive the backlights tend to blow. Soo its not really an expertise repair unless you know what your doing. The lcd tv's ive fixed the backlights are all on a 2 pin connector.

I have a LG RZ30LZ50 which is now about 3 1/2 years old. Last night it worked fine, however this morning that changed.
When I turn the TV on, Stand by light turns from red to green, there is a flash but then screen remains the same black, ie off/stand by color, but I can hear the sound. When looking into the grates of the case, when turning the thing on, I can see that the bulbs flash, so I don't think that the bulbs are dead, it must be the inverter.
