If you know when this problem started, I would recommend you use System Restore to go back to a restore point from before that time.

  1. In Windows, right-click on a program icon. Windows displays a Context menu.
  2. Choose Open With from the menu. (Don't choose Open; make sure you choose Open With.)
  3. If Windows displays another level of menu, make sure you select Choose Program. Windows displays the Open With dialog box. (See Figure 1.)
  4. In the list of available programs, select the correct program for that icon.
  5. Under the list of programs there is a check box labeled something like "Always use the Selected Program to Open this Kind of File." Select this check box.
  6. Click OK.
These steps change the file association for a single type of file-the type you right-clicked on in step 1. You will still need to check other file types to make sure they open with the proper program. If not, change the associations as described above.

SOURCE: Word has taken over my computer; every time I click on an icon for another program (all icons have been replaced by the Word logo), Word opens and says it can't read the file.

have you run a virus program? Backup to a earlier backup point? If you don't have a virus program you can get a free one at avast.com all you have to do is register it :)

Testimonial: "A virus would seem to be a likely cause, but I have antivirus programs running all the time. But it probably won't hurt to run the program you recommend. I also asked the computer to restore a previous version, and it did not help. I thank you profusely for taking the time to answer me. It was kind of you!"

All icons on Windows 10 desktop changed to Firefox icons

It sounds like the default program for opening files and folders on your Windows 10 desktop has been set to Firefox. To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:
  1. Right-click on a folder or file on your desktop and select "Properties" from the context menu.
  2. In the "Properties" window, click on the "Change" button next to "Opens with".
  3. Select the program that you want to use to open the folder or file, such as File Explorer, and click "OK".
  4. Repeat this process for each file type that is opening in Firefox.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can try resetting the default programs for all file types by following these steps:
  1. Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  2. Click on "Apps" and then select "Default apps" from the left-hand side menu.
  3. Scroll down and click on "Set defaults by app".
  4. Select the program that you want to use as the default for each file type, such as File Explorer, and click "Set this program as default".
  5. Repeat this process for each file type that is opening in Firefox.
Once you have reset the default programs for all file types, the icons on your desktop should return to their original appearance and open in the correct program.

Computer loads very slow especailly

The more programs and software you put onto a computer, the slower it can become.
However, the first thing to do is defragment your hard drive. Start your computer, open 'My computer' and right click on the C drive icon. From the tabs choose TOOLS and then defragment .. The time taken to defragment depends on the size of your hard drive.
Then go to the control panel and look for Install/Uninstall programs. If there's anything you can live without, uninstall it.
Restart your computer. If things are still slow (and you are confident you have plenty of RAM - memory) installed, suspect a failing hard drive.

Icons on desktop appeared and are unwanted

You can delete icons on your desktop by clicking on them, and pressing "Delete." This will only delete the shortcut icons, not the program themselves. To uninstall programs, open your computer's "Control Panel" and click "Uninstall Programs."

How do I access my webcam to take pictures and that sort of thing on my new hp laptop?

    1. Ensure the web cam is secured to your personal computer (PC). Most web cams use a "plug and play" principle. You plug the web cam in; it operates.
    2. Install the required software for the web cam to operate. This may involve placing a CD in one of the drives, or alternatively, downloading the software from a host site.
    3. Always reboot the computer after installing new software.
    4. Click on the desktop icon or the program icon to start the program. If the program is correctly functioning, the web cam will start producing an image of its view on the desktop. Adjust the web cam for a clear picture and the view you want.
    5. Most web programs will have a icon for "take picture." Left click on that icon or button. The web cam, like a normal camera, will then "freeze" that image and place it in a photo library.
    6. Open the photo library and examine the image just taken. Congratulations, you just took a photograph with your web cam.
