How to remove leftover files,folders and registry keys after uninstalling a software:
OK, first lets see what actually happens when we install a software?
When we install a software it copies some of its files usually in C:\Program Files , C:\Windows\System32 , Registry.
If we uninstall a Software from Add/Remove Program ( Win+R --> appwiz.cpl), it removes some files from C:\program Files only.
It will not remove the softwares supporting files and folders from System32 or Registry.
Now lets see how to remove these leftover files:
I use a small freeware utility called Revounistaller for this process.

Many program upgrades have their own old version uninstall prior to the upgrade install often times with a PC restart in the middle. For example Elecard MPG Player v4.6 to v5.6.

I have been looking for a way to do this for programs that don't adopt this technique for months now there are a few FREEWARE programs that are available like JV Powertools and Total Uninstaller but the Daddy of all has got to be REVO Uninstaller Pro.

Join them on RevoUninstaller@Facebook for a 20% discount on the FULL version its well worth the money I had major problems upgrading DivX Pro v7.0 to DivX Plus v8.0 it did OK on most of the install but left behind the old v7.1 DivX Convertor folder and registry keys and hid the serial codes on the new DivX Control Panel for all the older registered serials except the upgrade v8.0 serial.



Using this program I could locate the correct uninstall string even after the DivX own installer it leaves behind 198 registry items under the {7B63B....} key and 12 folders shown in red below using Total Commander with a total of 11.5 MB




Using REVO you can find where DivX is located in the registry and create a unique registration file just for my serials to un-hide them. Prior to the upgrade if you check DivX Pro v7.0 for updates it will tell you this as shown below it includes the H.264 Decoder v1.1.0




Sometimes after the upgrade you will not see the serial numbers like above or you may just see the DivX Plus Convertor 8.0 serial on the control panel it will just say registered if you want this to show you need to create a reg file replace the "" with your 20 digit serial that you purchased and all will now SHOW on the control panel the latest version of the pro codec is v6.9.2 you can check this using regedit and goto this reg key you will also see the other codecs that are loaded



You may see and extra line that has the same code as the procodec this is for the older professional version of the convertor before they rolled out the plus versionand can be removed from the DivX v8.0 Plus registry key

If you check for updates in the new control panel it does not tell you which versions that you have installed you will need to check the Product Registration page



This is what it will look like before you edit the registry key to show the serial numbers, NOTE these are stored unencrypted in your registry so make sure that no-one has access to them.
