Hi, I've only just come on line to see and glad that you have identified the problem yourself- as you say persistence pays. I'm not even sure that I would have been able to suggest anything myself other than 'are you sure the lock and sensor are physically working?' ;-0) John C
Could be a bad lock or possibly a bad control board. I run into this all the time, working for a maytag/whirlpool dealer and repair facility. If your in a area that has alot of power outtages or surges get a surge protector after you get your problem fixed.
Sounds like the pump is trying to drain the water but something is clogged in it or the pump itself is bad. Door wont unlock if machine thinks there is water inside. Remove front lower panel. pump is in center. Unscrew cap and remove attached filter. Be prepared for water to come gushing out once filter is removed. Clean filter and reinstall. If problem persists then the pump itself needs to be replaced.
make sure you havent locked the console by accident it is in small print on the front right of the console other than that you will probably need a technician
