How to reset or remove BIOS password

There are four common categories of solutions to remove or reset a BIOS password and here are the details on how to go about resetting your BIOS password.

Manufacturer Backdoor BIOS Password

Most of the BIOS makers have set a backdoor password on the older computer models. That is the master password for BIOS. To reset BIOS passwords first you need to check the manufacturer of your computer's BIOS. Most computers have BIOS include AMI, IBM, Award, and Phoenix. These are the most common BIOS. You can unlock your locked BIOS using this master password. It works, no matter what the user sets the password to. Many popular computer and laptop manufacturers such as HP and DELL lock the BIOS because they want to protect their machine's most sensitive areas (those areas which have warranty) from their customers. These passwords are usually used by computer technicians for testing and repairing.

Reset the jumper that holds the password

Open the computer and locate on the motherboard the BIOS password jumper. The jumper is usually jumper 1 and often labeled as PSWD, PWD, CLRPWD, CLEAR, JCMOS1, CLR, CLEAR CMOS, PASSWD, or PASSWORD. Normally you would have 3 pins and to reset the password you just need to put the jumper on the 2 and 3 pins leaving pin 1 empty. After you move the jumper, turn the computer on to clear the password, then once password removed turn it off and put the jumper back to its original position.

Removing the CMOS Battery to reset the BIOS to default

Switch off your computer, and open up the case. You'll see a circular metallic silver item on motherboard. This is called CMOS Battery. Remove it carefully, and leave it out for about 2 minutes. This act will remove the CMOS memory which contains BIOS password. Set the CMOS battery back and switch on the computer. Restore the CMOS configuration as default. Your BIOS password has been cleared now.

Using third party software utility to reset BIOS password

To reset BIOS you can use third party software like Kill CMOS which wipes out CMOS, or CmosPwd which is a BIOS utility. Hiren's Boot CD has a few programs including the above two that will help you to reset the password. Here is a link to Hirens Boot CD website http://www.hirensbootcd.org/. To download the latest version, click on the Download link on the left side and go to the last page. You will need a CD writer to put the content on a blank CD.

How to remove a BIOS password from a desk top

This is both trickier and easier than you might think.

 1. Shut down PC, disconnect power, and open case.
 2. Look for two pins sticking up off the motherboard that say: "RESET CMOS" or "CMOS PASS" or "BIOS PASS" or "BIOS RESET" or some combination.
 3. There should be a plastic "jumper" that is attached to ONE of the pins on the CMOS jumper (step two).
 4. Carefully remove the "jumper" by pulling straight up on it.
 5. Replace the jumper so that both pins are inserted into it.
 6. Connect Power and Power On your PC
 7. (it may beep loudly and shut off or it may startup like normal, allowing you to get into your BIOS)
 8. Shut down PC, remove power
 9. return the "jumper" (step two) so that only one pin is connected like you found it.
 10. Power on your PC and you should be good to go.

NOTE: If you don't have a jumper on your motherboard, you will need to find one. Often, a CD-ROM drive or old IDE hard drive will have a jumper on it. If you find a jumper on an old device that is not connected and not running, you can use it so long as you remember to return it to it's original position. Failing to return a "borrowed" jumper from an external device could make it unusable in the future.

Also, never use a jumper from elsewhere on your motherboard. These jumpers can be critical to the operation of your PC and "borrowing" one could render your PC useless and may not ever help you to reset the BIOS password.

NOTE: When you reset the BIOS password in this manner, all of your custom BIOS settings will be reset. Any hardware that you had to configure manually through your BIOS may not work. Overclocking and other features may be disabled by default. This should not be done without proper consideration.

Hope this helps,
Jase

"Reset you're cmos/bios jumper to

HI,
No need to worry. There are many known ways to reset / remove / bypass the password:
 • By removing the CMOS battery
 • By using the motherboard jumper
 • By using MS DOS command
 • By using software
 • By using Backdoor BIOS password
Now I'll try to explain each method one by one:
A. By Removing the CMOS Battery:
xrojer_2.jpg
Almost all motherboards use a small coin sized CMOS battery to store all BIOS settings along with the password. To reset the password, unplug the PC, open the cabinet and remove the CMOS battery for approx. 15-30 minutes and then put it back. It'll reset all BIOS settings as well as the password and you'll need to re-enter all settings.
If it fails, then try to remove the battery for at least one hour.

B. By Using the Motherboard Jumper:
Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don't have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.
When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.
Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper.

C. By Using MS DOS Command:
This method works only if you have access to the system when its turned on because this method requires MS DOS. Open Command Prompt from Programs menu and provide following commands one bye one:
debug
o 70 2E
o 71 FF
quit
NOTE: The first character in the above commands is "O" and not the number 0.
After providing the above commands, restart your system and it should reset the CMOS Settings along with the BIOS password.
If you are curious to know how it works? then let me explain the above commands:
In this method we are using the Debug tool of MS DOS. The "O" character present at first in these commands, outputs the values to IO ports. The number 70 and 71 are port numbers which are used to access CMOS memory. By providing FF value we are telling CMOS that there is an invalid checksum and it resets the CMOS settings as well as BIOS password.

Where is jumper reset

The reset jumper is labelled JBAT1 (circled in red below). Pins 1+2 are jumpered/shorted right now, just turn the machine off, move the jumper over to short pins 2+3, wait 5-10 seconds, move it back to pins 1+2 and fire it back up. Have fun!

A200 bios password how to remove

HI,

The best way to remove the bios password is to reset your bios jumper. All boards have the jumper, you will move the jumper from it's current position to the next pin. Example. It has two pins. Jumper Pin 1 and 2. The jumper might current be set on pin 1 and blank. Move the jumper to pin 2 and blank. Leave it on for about 10 seconds and then move it back to the original position. This will reset your BIOS.

Good Luck

I have a duel core pc system but need to get rid of the bios password to gain access, can anyone help?

Find a diagram of your specific motherboard. Find the jumpers for clearing your bios. There will be a setting that will reset all bios options to default... Make sure you are tampering with the correct jumpers. Playing around with the wrong ones can do serious damage to your motherboard. However, the manufacturers site should have thorough instructions on how to set them. Clear the bios/resetting to defaults should clear any passwords.
