We just brought our wii today and have been playing wii sports i had a go then my partner did , we then tried to put sonic into it and it said disc error and we were to turn the console off, we did that now the console wont turn back on...there are brand new batteries in the hand controller and that switches on but the console doesnt....should i take it back?

This should only happen if they are backed up games. But you can mod your wii system at www.wiihdmods.com and get 100 wii games playable from a hard drive for 150.00
I had the same problem. I called wii support (1800-255-3700) and they gave me the solution. Some new games include a wii update that must be installed before the game will work. Insert the disk. When the wii menu comes up point the wii remote at the spinning disc and click A. Follow the instructions for installing the update. Your game will work once the update completes.
Well: first. press the home button then go down and click wii remote setting s then click disconnect wii remote then both of you press the 1 and 2 buttons until it recognizes your wii remotes.
My guess is that she changed the character before putting it in mii parade. The same situation happened to me, however if you simply put them in mii parade without changing it should be fine. It does note too when you put someone into mii parade that it has the potential to lose data, so it seems unfixable as of yet.
the eject button must of gotten stuck into the wii.don't take your wii apart.call the nintendo customor support number :1-800-255-3700.they will tell you the problem and before you know it.it will be fixed
