Watching TV and then the bottom half went black while the top half was playing, then the top half went black too. Turning the TV off and then on did not solve it. Unplugging everything then plugging it back in didn't solve it either. Now what. It's out of warranty of course.

The device sources and the inputs have not been set to the correct mod. There could be a problem with the TV it's self for it to be turning off like a problem with the power supply for the TV.
top half missing is in vertical circuit of set---if it is a 27 inch and this old consider retiring it and replacing----other option is consider having a shop repair it--a rough guess would be as high as 150 dollars parts and labor is possible for your problems.
Not really a solution, sorry, but I've got the very same problem. I haven't noticed the time before tv faults, but nontheless, it greenscreens or like in your case, redscreens as well. I've been told to open the back, which I did to check the status of the capicitors, which I've done. But, the capacitors "seem" fine. No bulging or popped tops. So, I'm at a stand still...not sure what to do at this point. If someone gives you solution, I sure would appreciate your forwarding it on to me. Thanks. Robert
Download software from the Phillips web site. Use a usb flashdrive to transfer the download to the TV. This worked well for us and our picture is better than ever.
I have a similar issue. Sometimes the entire screen goes black and sometimes only one-half - either the top or bottom half goes black. The only solution we have found is to gently tap the TV (usually the front side) and the picture will come back for awhile. It almost seems heat related as it only goes out after the first 10 minutes of use. There must be a fix to this.
Most if not all DVD's are 16 by 9 even in 4.3 mode you are going to have those bars on this TV. Some television have a zoom feature to get rid of that but not this one.
