If the needle is not in all the way it will bottom out in the shuttle, or if you bought new needles and accedently got the wrong ones. If the needle does not enter the needle plate far enough to be bottoming out then the machine is out of time. You know i was about to hit post it and I realized I didn't think about, if the needle is bent it will hit the hook. so check those things hope it works out.

SOURCE: singer model 7442 needle hits plastic piece under

Perhaps you have bent the needle. Or perhaps you have shifted the bobbin somewhat while removing jammed fabric.

Clanking noise & won't sew

Are you sure you put the correct type of needle in? Normally, if you have any problem, cleaning and oiling will fix it. It sounds like you either didn't tighten the needle screw or you put the wrong type of needle in.

I volunteer at a women's prison in their sewing class and we have model 385-16231301. The bobbin thread does not pick up. The bobin case seems to sit in their properly, but when I turn it manually...

check the needle to make sure that it's inserted correctly, the flat side of the needle goes to the back of the machine,, and make sure the needle goes all the way up into the needle cavity .

make sure the bobbin is correctly inserted

clean under the needle plate area & in bobbin area for loose threads or lint

if none of the above work & the needle is still hitting something then it 's a great possibility it's out of time & needs to be serviced, cause the needle should not be hitting anything when it goes down.

The needle keeps breaking. The needle seems to be hitting something or getting caught when it goes down and then it breaks off. I can't even get the needle to pick up the bobbin thread because it...

Certain stitches you do, require different base plates...by the base plate, I mean the metal piece that the needle passes through when it goes down through your cloth and through the hole provided...This sounds like why it's breaking, I think your needle is hitting the plate under it. It may not be all that obvious, but it wouldn't take much to snap the needle. You may want to check your setting and make sure it's setup to do a regular stitch. If that's not it, then you need to make sure that the needle is in straight, though I believe putting on in crooked is hard to do.
I hope this helps.

Needle hits the white plastic where the bobbin case sits.

It may be as simple as you didnt get the needle pushed all the way up in the needle bar. Get new package of needles and try a new needle and make *sure* it goes up as far as you can push it. the reason I suggest a new pkg of needles is if one is bad in the pkg, they are probably all bad. If that doesnt fix it then the needle bar timing/height is off and need to be repaired/adjusted by a tech.

Sounds like your tension is too tight and the thread is pulling your needle. Also, make your that you needle position button is on center. If it is on left or right it will cause your needle to snap.
