Does the MSI K8n NEO4 Platinum SLI motherboard support the Geforce GTX 550 Video Card?

The MSI K8N NEO 4 Platinum Edition mobo, has an AGP graphics expansion slot. (Accelerated Graphics Port)

It uses AGP graphics cards that are either 4X, or 8X. (Supports 1.5 Volt AGP graphics cards, hence 8X)

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K8N-Neo-Platinum.html#/?div=Detail

Click on the Specification tab. Look under the bold - Slots - subheading.

(Overview, { Which is the tab it automatically opens to}, Specification, Download, Support, News and Awards, Where to Buy )

This is Evga's version of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625

Click on the Details tab. (Overview, Details, Feedback)

Under the bold - Interface - heading, and to the right of the subheading - Interface, we see the interface is - PCI-Express 2.0 x16.

Tells you a lot right off the bat, if you know what you are looking at.

1) The graphics expansion slot you need on your motherboard, is a PCI-Express x16 slot.

You have an AGP graphics expansion slot. (That uses either 4X, or 8X AGP graphics cards)

2) The PCI-Express technology used is PCI-Express 2.0

Therefore the answer is No, Stephen.

[ More info on AGP graphics technology, and PCI-Express technology,

1) AGP:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGP

2) PCI-Express:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

Now if someone asks you, why the GeForce GTX 550 graphics card will not work on your motherboard, you can explain why in detail, instead of just saying some dude/dudette on FixYa, said it will not work.

Are you sure some 'Mom and Pop' computer store will not trade out, a decent AGP graphics card, for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 you have?
Always worth a shot. Just MHO.

My n1996 onboard display card doesnt displsy any more, can i use an another AGP CARD

Your board has S3 graphics and if you would like to try and find drivers for that this is MSI's link;
http://www.msi.com/service/download/
I don't know what version of windows you are running and/or what the exact problem is with your graphics however, to answer your question, Your card will accept AGP 8X, 4X cards and, as long as you have an operational slot open, yes you can use AGP cards. If you have upgraded to Windows 7, you can find cards that have Windows 7 support.

Graphics cards

Hi noxiney, you're MSI motherboard does have 1 opened AGP 8x4x slot. You can install & run the ATI Radeon X1650 PRO AGP. You can not run PCI-Express because there are no PCI-E slots on the board. There are PCI (White in color) on the board but the AGP slot is much faster than the PCI (White in color slots). The manual states the AGP card can only support 1.5volt video cards & not 3.3volt AGP cards. (Keep this in mind when looking for an AGP card).
Below is a link to a bunch of AGP 8x4x video cards. One or two include DDR2 memory. Carefull where you buy. Check the warranty. (Longer is better). The first one on the list would be compatible. Its not DDR2 but it does have 512MB of memory.

This card is 1.5v compatable.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3101648&CatId=318
& this is compatable.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1642902&CatId=318
Just remember, if the card can run both 8x & 4x it should support the 1.5volt needed to function on the MB.

Enjoy!

Mike
