It looks like you have the maximum processor specification that will work with the current board. If I were you I would invest in at least a new motherboard for the PC you can find them on ebay for less than $50 some of which will support even the first generation i series processors.

SOURCE: Upgrade

Because of the shear numbers of Dell models and #'s of motherboards, my safest suggestion to you is to go to the web-page I will place below and have dell analyze your computer.
By doing this you are allowing the manufacturer to see what they supplied you with, then they will tell you after the analytical test just what you can or cannot do with your motherboard.
Its easy do it right first time and you won't go wrong, if you are not happy with the results, use the support number to call a service center and ask a tech. I am say this as this can be an expensive mistake you will not thank anyone for.

Can I upgrade e 4100 processor?

Based on the motherboard specifications, and looking at the specs that the Gateway lists for the unit, A Pentium 4 processor socket 478 at 2.8 GHz is the maximum for that machine. Gateway specs show exactly that is what is installed on the E4100. Unfortunately, most pre-built machines have little or no CPU upgradeability since they are built to specs.

Can i up grade my single core cpu pen4 550 3,4GHz to a Quad core or dual core either one would help

Depends on the socket type.. Socket 423 and 478 do not support core duo or quad core processor types. However, if you have LGA 775 (aka socket T) your motherboard will support the following:
Intel Pentium 4 (2.60 - 3.80 GHz)
Intel Celeron D (2.53 - 3.60 GHz )
Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Intel Pentium D (2.66 - 3.60 GHz)
Pentium Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Pentium Dual-Core (1.40 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.60 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Extreme (2.66 - 3.20 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Quad (2.33 - 3.00 GHz)
Intel Xeon (1.86-3.40 GHz)
Intel Celeron (1.60 - 2.40 GHz)

Hi, I have HP dv4000 model, Intel Pentium 1.60 GHz processors, Can I upgrade the processor? And what is the maximum upgrade for the processor? Regards, for more details and features...

According to the service manual, these are the processors your notebook will handle:

Part#
Intel Pentium M 2.13-GHz 396700-001
Intel Pentium M 2.00-GHz 396699-001
Intel Pentium M 1.86-GHz 393327-001
Intel Pentium M 1.73-GHz 383474-001
Intel Pentium M 1.60-GHz 383473-001 and 396698-001

Intel Celeron M 1.50-GHz 383471-001
Intel Celeron M 1.40-GHz 396697-001
Intel Celeron M 1.30-GHz 389036-001

So it looks like the Pentium 2.13GHZ is the top one.

Here is a link to the service manual for reference: This is on page 5-24.

Thanks fro using Fixya. A Fixya rating would be most appreciated.

Upgrade from 600 MHz to 1 GhZ

According to this review, you can upgrade as far as a 2 GHz P4-M at least; http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,669029,00.asp Other than that, i have been unable to find the details of your motherboard - if you can post the make and model (should be printed on it somewhere) then I would hope to find a more complete list of compatible and incompatible processors. Gateway themselves no longer offer online info or support for this model, but the motherboard details should enable me to find out what you need to know. Waiting for your post :)
