We have used this printer for quite awhile. It developped this problem this morning. It should be a sensor problem but the driver problem. Maybe a sensor needs cleaning. Where is the sensor? Any suggestion? Thanks. We have used this printer for quite awhile. It developped this problem this morning. It should be a sensor problem but the driver problem. Maybe a sensor needs cleaning. That error, usually means that the engine PCB is bad. If you call brother they'll tell you to check the print count, and if it's a certain number, all you can do is replace that PCB. It runs around $400.00.
Here is a solution I found posted by Razor. (It turns out my engine controller board is bad.) Good luck with yours.
On your control panel, press "menu/set" "7" then "2". if your page count shows 288,888, you have a bad engine controller board. anything other than that count, most likely is a damaged paper cassette. there is a tab on front left side that is probably worn or broke off.

Driver could be corrupt. Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
The machine is calling for legal sized paper and it thinks it has it in the paper tray. Check the back stop that is inside the paper tray. It should be a green guide that is closest to you if you pull the tray out. You may have to lift up a flap on the end. Make sure that the paper stop is on the correct paper size for what is in the tray. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
this is a hardware problem with there crappy printer .. and the fact is that it cost more ot fix it then to buy a new one ... I believe they set it to a certain amount of time and freeze up so ppl can buy a new on or the part or it

OK, we never found a battery locally, but we tried something else. WE removed the battery and left it out for several hours. Our thinking was we were trying to reset the memory somehow. Well, it worked. We put the same battery back in hours later and the check tray msg. went away. The printer still works fine almost 24 hours later.
