Open Microwave Door and Fan comes on

Our microwave (Model JVM1339BW02) began coming on (fan only, no microwaves being emitted) when we opened the door. Then a week later, it just stopped operating entirely, but the display/clock was still lit. I'm a DITY type person and removed the microwave cover, finding that on one of the three door switches the on/off tab was broke. I reordered the part and installed it. It now runs again, but again, only when the door is opened (fan only). The other 2 switched appear to be OK. Can you tell me what other part might be affecting this?

Thanks so much for all your help, specifically your suggestion to change out the other two switches as well.  After replacing them, the microwave is now back to normal operations once again...not only that, my wife says "Rock-on Techies!"   We're back to "Nukin' " once again.

Usually this is a problem with the door switches or a broken door switch mount.

Sometimes after a part replacement one will find a couple of wires have been reversed.

There should be a mini-manual with wiring diagram inside the oven behind the control panel.

If those are all correct, you may have a problem with the control panel, which we repair nationwide for $39.95.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Tappan Speedwave 1000 turns on when door is opened

Microwaves do normally 'turn on', in that the light comes on and the fan starts running. If the turntable starts turning and it is emitting microwave energy, then you need to take it for service or replace it. To me, it sounds fine.

GE Profile microwave PVM1790 starts, what I believe is an internal fan, when I open the door. I sure hope it's not the microwave component frying me.

You probably have a defective door switch, or a bad relay. You are not being microwaved. It would blow its internal fuse to prevent that from happening.

My microwave has stopped working. Everything functions properly, including the light when the door is open, and the timer countdown begins when I press start, but the actual unit will not turn on...

Sounds like a bad magnatron (the part that emits microwave energy) or maybe just a bad door switch. If the door switch is bad it won't let the unit come on.

Sharp R-520KS - When the door is opened, the light and fan comes on and the carousel rotates. I don't know if microwaves are emitted. How can I stop the fan from coming on and the carousel from...

You can tell if microwaves are being emitted if you get warm standing in front of it (seriously). But I wouldn't recommend that unless you want to cook yourself.

First thing that comes to mind is the door interlocks are out of adjustment or bad. Home microwave ovens are not supposed to operate like that. Some commercial models start the fan right away and run it after the cooking cycle is completed but I've never heard of a consumer model that does that.

Find your closest servicer here and have them take a look.

Microwave seems to turn on when door latch is opened

What's happening is you are activating one door switch a little before the other, and that is causing your light, fan, and turntable to come on. The plastic parts are not perfectly rigid, so they flex a little when you press the button, and that causes the lag to be more apparent. Even if you press the door open faster and look really close, you may notice the light, fan, and turntable coming on for a split second. That's perfectly normal. The relay on the control board must also be turned on before it will actually be cooking.
