Once installed, open the HP Wireless Assistant and click Properties button. Check the box next to "Independent controls for installed wireless devices." Then click "Turn All On" button. On next boot it will be enabled!
if there is a touch pad across the top with lights for sound mute etc. there is 1 in far right corner top right if it is orange the wireless is off touch the orange light it should turn blue if it does the wireless will be turned on ready to use.
if it does not go to control panel click on programs and unistall the hp wireless assistance and reboot the computer.
then after a reboot the wireless light should go blue.
Can you describe what software/program you are using to establish the wireless connection?
What colour Led is located near the wireless button? Ornage of Blue? It should switch from orange to blue, if it stays orange, the Wireless card is broken. This is a known issue on all HP DV6xxx, DV9xxx but also on allmost all Compaq V6xxx units. And has extended warranty, more info:

I had that same problem, I turns out about a day later I dropped the laptop on accident and it started working again. I would not advise my way of getting the button to work again.
