Carftsman DYT 4000 42" 18.5 OHV Intek Plus Fuel Problem

Motor Model# 31p777 Type: 0348e1 Code: 031217ze
Mower Model# 917.273640

Hello, I turned it off after running for about an hour and when I tried to crank it back up it flooded. I waited a while and it started up but ran poorly. I parked it about a week ago and when I went out to crank it today it turned over but blew the manifold vent off connected to the carb and shot gas everywhere, I pulled the air filter and it was soaked with gas. I looked in the carb and its full of gas.I have taken the carb off to try and figure out the situation. I have found that gas is in everything, The manifold vent hose had gas coming out of it and the cylinder behind where the carb attaches was full. I took the spark plug out and gas poured out. I also think the oil might have gas in it as well. It has wires going to the bottom bowl of the carb so I assume its a solenoid. Could that be the problem? If the spark plug stopped getting enough fire could that cause everything to fill up with gas? Im not sure what to try first and thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Jerry, I think the float or the choke sticking was the end result. I took the carb apart and cleaned it up real good. I had to drain the oil 3 times to get all the gas out but what was real weird was the vent coming off the head had close to a half a gallon of gas in it. After getting everything else worked out I left the vent hose off the carb and it ran gas out for a while when it was running. I think I will cut the yard and change the oil one more time. I hope the problem is fixed now. We shall see.....Thanks again

Check that the solenoid gas valve under the carburetor float bowl is closing. It is screwed into that bowl. check it's getting 12 volts, then check that it is free to operate. If it does not close, fuel can also accumulate in the engine with the oil.

Sounds like you have a float problem their is a needle and seat the lets gas into bowl of carburetor if its bad it will not stop letting fuel in the carburetor causing your problem (Be sure to change oil before ing engine over or you could damage engine (with this problem you get gas into case which will remove oil from engine parts inside !

I have an intek 55 ohv engine as fitted to my self propelled mower but there are no id numbers on the motor apart from the sticker that says intek 55

If I remember correctly they are hard to see as are under the engine cover on the metal piece over the muffler. It be 120000 series. The governor spring depends on the model and type numbers of the engine.

your engine will be 31p777 intek ohv avs

run the piston to tdc on compression stroke , then turn piston past tdc & set piston is 1/4 inch down the bore on power stroke this eliminates decomprssor lift from the setting

intake should be 0.003 Thou
and exhaust 0.005t thou

then check the carburettor main jets and emulsion tube and pilot jets and air bleeds and progression ports for obstruction etc for restriction / blockage

check fuel flow from tank to carb , check that the fuel solenoid has got continual 12 volt supply

back pressure is from a blocked muffler ( carbon build up)
if it is that old then it could be overheating from grass and dirt build up around the cylinder fins and not cooling properly

What engines will fit craftsman dyt 4000 (18.5 blew w/ 290 hours)

Hi there
The only thing you have to do is have the size (diameter) and lenght (from cranckcase to end of shaft) of the shaft you have on your b&s and just go to your local Honda dealer , give them your shaft size and they should be able to give you all the options for a brand new motor . I really believe you can get a Honda 20hp model GXV620 or a 24hp model GXV670 that will replace your B & S motor .
Hope this help .
