Tires and tines will not engage

I bought a Craftsman rear tine rototiller tines can be switched to forward or reverse. I bought it got it home drove it off the truck, got it into the back yard and tried to engage the tines, i have not been able to get the transmission to engage anything, forward, nuetral, reverse, or the tines in any direction. I can roll the tiller in forward or reverse for about 2' and the tires lock up in both directions. how do i get it to move and engage the tines again? Both were working when i bought it an hour before hand.

Model number would be VERY helpful here because craftsman made many different styles/models throughout the years

SOURCE: Own a "Craftsman Rear Tine

Hi,
Can you move the tines by hand???
They should turn by hand if you try to move them...if not then they are bound up by something...
either a bearing has gone bad, something has wrapped around them, or there is something stuck in there that will not let them turn...check for a rock stuck between one of the tines and the housing around them...

Get the tines moving freely and you will be okay again...

It's possible you have snapped the shear pin in the transmission shaft.

Craftsman rear tine tiller

If you cant move the tines by hand then I wouldn't think you sheared the pins, more like a gear box problem.

Have a sears craftsman 6.0 rear tine tiller.

Hi little,

The 7.0 hp version does the same thing.

I found that it was caused by the transmission not being fully engaged to a particular setting. when it tries to engage the tines in both forward and reverse, the engine stalls immediately.

After taking to neutral and back a few dozen times I got a 'feel' for it. Has happened in over a year.

Try it. It did take patience.

Best regards

Craftsman rototiller 3 5 model 917 299130 leaks

Sounds like you are speaking of the float bowl.
It should not have a hole in it.
You could purchase the part from Sears or a small engine shop.
If it were mine, I'd remove the bowl, clean it, and patch with a gasoline impervious material such as JB weld.
