As the check is scanned the optics are reading a security code imbedded in the paper that prevents the check from being copied it will probably do the same if you try to copy paper money.

Hp inkjet printing solid black page

Hi Robert, if you're trying to copy something that you've placed on the glass without closing the cover of the copier, there's too much back light (coming from behind the item to be copied) and therefore the resulting page will be black. The only light should come from within the copier itself.
If the item you're copying is bulky and will not allow the cover to close, try taking an 8-1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper and cutting out only enough of the page to allow your item (to be copied) to sit flat on the glass while covering the remaining exposed glass with the paper.
I hope this helps, good luck.

Copies & Faxes come out solid black

Sounds like a charge problem, check the clutch that moves the charge roller to contact the drum. The clutch is on the back of the machine. Brad
