GE jvm1190 above the range microwave /convection (2001 model)

Microwave functions fine for 3 minutes and then unit shuts down completely.  after 10-15 minutes of rest, the display board prompts you to enter the time for the clock and everything works fine again unless you operate in micro mode for more than 3 minutes or so, then it shuts down again.  Only other symptom is that it seems to be making more noise in micro mode - as though something is loose internally.  Any advice?

the problem is identical, not sure of the model #, but it is a GE profile, over the range

Check this ouit first before you go out and buy a new mag:
The mag's little cooling fan probably broke loose and fell off the fan motor's shaft. The fan motor will still be running when you hit start but there is no fan on it. The fan keeps the mag cooler. The mag will heat up too much in a few minutes and then shortly the oven automatically shuts everything down when the mag gets too hot because the fan blade is just lying in there, Fan needs to be glued back on the shaft after the shaft is roughed up a little. Disconnect the plug-in wires (note where they go on), wiggle and remove the fan motor from the oven. I used contact cement to hold the fan to the shaft. the fan motor is located right behind the control panel. You have to first remove the grill, then the control panel's screws. It's not difficult to repair. No new parts needed. Poor engineering design of the cooling fan shaft.

It sounds just like the magnetron is bad, overheating and opening the thermostat. This is how it would work if that were the case.

One other thing is to be sure that the cooling fan is running and that you feel air flow.

You should check the air filter and grille, as well as the outside vent for any blockage.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

GE model number jvm1790sk 01 over range microwave convection oven turns on when door is closed but i think it is the convection oven that is on cause the turn table does not turn and the light does not...

That's probably a shorted relay on the control circuit board.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one-year guarantee.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

JVM1190 wont cook

You have a blown actuator. This is the device that creates the microwaves that cook the food. The cost of one of these will be as much as a new unit.

GE JVM1190 control pad

It is not your key panel, but the magnetron inside the microwave that is causing you the problem. The reason it does not short out on defrost or convection is because it is not drawing as much current through the magnetron to short out.

Ge JVM1190 appears to be working but does not cook.

I spoke with a qualified microwave technician who advised me to buy a new microwave as the problem I was having indicated that the magnetron tube had blown. What a waste of time to ask for help from you.

GE JVM1190 microwave oven light comes on, but no the FAN or "microwaves"

If it were just just not cooking, I would suspect the magentron. But since the fan is also not working, I think you have a bad door switch. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety and disassembly info at our site, as well as other specific troubleshooting information and help. In my professional opinion, no one should work on a microwave unless they are fully informed and aware of the deadly hazards and necessary precautions. You can find safety and disassembly text files (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at http://www.microwavedisplay.com You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
