I have even bought new SanDisk cards but it still says they are locked but they aren't. It must be the camera at fault. Any ideas?
Oops. Later read what my first thought was. Forget that is what comes first means anything to you.
Your camera is not that young. You only can us SD cards. It is very difficult to buy them.
If you bought a 4GB card you definitely have a SDHC card and your camera can't work with that. Today even lots of 2 GB cards are already SDHC. I know if you look good, you could fine a 4GB SD card. I have bought some recently. Look for Platinum 4GB SD Card.
Still if you are sure you do have a 1GB or less SD card, read what is next.
Looks this is not on the card, but in the camera. It could be the switch that sees if you "Locked" the memory card is pushed by something else. I'm not sure if you could see that, with a magnifying glass perhaps and some extra light? Look in the memory card holder, if you see something strange. And only use some pressed air (never high pressure, because you could blow up your camera) A technician cold go a little farther, and open the camera. to check is there is no corrosion in the switch(es). But before you go out for a repair, I think you could buy a camera with better quality pictures now, for probably less money than repair would cost

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. If your camera is more than a few couple years old, it's likely it was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with older cameras.
For older cameras, you'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

There should be a small toggle along the end side (it is tiny and easily missed, but it is there, I just checked my memory card / mine is 4GB SD card from Sony) that you can swtich to unlock
and your images may come back that way.
Look for it this way, hold the card face down it should be on the back edge where you use your thumb or finger to push it into the slot on your camera.

How annoying and I have just bought 2 new ones! Will see what my manual says although my old card was the same as the ones I have just bought so they should work too. Very strange.
