Noisy gear on whirlpool ice maker when the plastic wheel turns against the teeth

My husband replaced ice maker 2 weeks ago, working fine except for this noise that we found it is from the wheel as it turns back and forth. What can we do to stop the noise?

The new icemaker is new and should not be doing that - return for exchange.

SOURCE: ice machine isn't working

Two things come to mind.

First, the water valve at the bottom rear of the refrigerator may have failed. You didn't mention if there is a water dispenser and whether or not this is still working. This valve pumps water to the icemaker and water dispenser when the control unit of the icemaker calls for water. Also, there could be a blockage in the line which brings the water to the icemaker.

The other possibility is that the part of the icemaker controls which calls for water from the valve has failed. If this has happened, it would likely be more cost effective to replace the icemaker unit.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Gold Refrigerator (GS5SHAXNLOO) Ice maker not running, some ice in maker melted together

I have the same model. This has happened to me several times (usually when the door was kept ajar without notice).
Simply open the door, take a common hairdryer and blow at high speed (hottest also) all around the area of where you can feel the ice in the tray, but hasn't dumped yet. It will usually take about 5-8 minutes of consistently moving back and forth around that area. What has happened is the lines bringing water to the trays have frozen over. When you "thaw" them out, the ice made will dump in about 45 minutes. When you hear the ice fall, you will know it's in working order again. I have NOT heard this is a "flawed" icemaker, only that it is hypersensitive to freezing lines when a door is left ajar. In your case, to prevent this from happening again. If you shut the icemaker off again, make SURE you turn off the source of the water feed BEFORE you turn off the ice maker. By doing this, the lines will empty as it makes it's last tray of water. Try that - very confident it will fix your problem!

The ice maker has been working fine, now all a sudden it stoped working. The other night the moter that kicks the ice cubes out was making a funny clicking noise, like something was hung up in the gears....

Good day,
Snap off front cover. If it has a white plastic gear with a SCREW in the middle, check the teeth in the gear. If stripped replace it with a new one. If it is the modular style, you'll have to replace the module or better yet the complete ice maker.
The module isn't really cost effective.

ICE MAKER NOT MAKING ICE. WATER DISPENSER IS WORKING FINE

Hi!

Thanks for using FixYa. Please check whether the ice maker has been turned off. Also check the following:

1. Make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

2. The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

3. The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you've found broken parts, replace these.
Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Whirlpool stopped making ice, water side is fine.

Hi!

Please check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary

Please do rate this solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.

Ice dispenser won't turn on, and the ice maker won't make ice.

If you have a whirlpool icemaker inside of your freezer (I've read on other posts that whirlpool ice makers are installed in various makes and models), there is a white cover over the ice maker (it's square). Remove the square cover with your hands or stick a flat head screwdriver in the side until you can pull it off.

Once the white square cover is removed, you should see a white wheel with gear teeth. In the middle of the white wheel is a plastic snap that should be holding it in. I noticed that one of the little plastic snaps was broken...which caused my "no ice" problem. A simple test is to push the white wheel toward the icemaker. If the wheel starts turning, you have found the problem.

Because the little plastic snap tab was broken off, I was able to pull the white wheel out completely.

You see, behind the white wheel are metal contacts that need pressure for the ice maker to work. Without the center plastic snaps holding it it, the pressure is gone...and so is the metal to metal contact.

I previously called Whirlpool, searched all of the web...to no avail. Every other solution was "check for ice blocking the water tube" or "replace your water filter". That's all balony. If your regular water dispenser is working, you don't have an ice problem. And if your water dispenser is working, you don't have to change your filter either.

If you realize that the little white wheel is the culprit, just google "whirlpool module" and you will see it for sale. I found one on ebay for under thirty buckaroos with free shipping.

Hope this helps.

Whirlpool Gold Ice Maker problem Model # GS6NBEXRS00

I hate to ask the obvious but is your water supply turned back on since the filter change?
  • It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these:

    • If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire.

    • If there's no plastic lever, simply lower the wire.

In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

Ice maker not making ice

How old is the unit? These things are actually very delicate, a power surge will take them out. The devil to service them is that they are difficult to diagnose out of the freezer. If you see a burnt or melted spot on the timer wheel, it's done. The timer wheel is behind the square plastic cover, which pulls off the front. That front part, which I think is called the module, is replaceable. On the two units I have worked on, that was where the problem was.
