Motor started to smoke. What do I do to fix it?

I think... without knowing that motor... that the capacitor is a start capacitor, and that the start switch may be trying to "start" the motor full-time instead of switching it out of circuit after it figures that the motor has spun up. I may be wrong - that design may be a capacitor-run motor (similar to a three-phase motor) - but I'm betting it's a start-only capacitor.

If you know someone with a capacitance meter, you could check the capacitor - for both capacitance (to be sure it matches the label) and leakage. Easy way to write that one off. Alternatively, you could rig it such that after the motor's wound up you could manually disconnect the capacitor and see what happens - either the motor stops or else the smoking issue stops.

Whatever you do, don't let it smoke very long. The varnish on the windings is only so thick.

Maybe Maybe not. There is a computer style speed control board inside the mixer that can get real hot when the mixer is over loaded and the circuit can burn out, $30.-$35.00 dollar part easy fix, or the motor at $90.00 to $100.00 to replace. You can do either fix yourself with the new design. I have only replaced one motor in the Kitchen Aid mixers in all the years I have been fixing them. Only replaced one full motor. Go to kitchenaid,com and download a parts list for your model from the support tab and it will guide you to the part number and the path to follow to fix it. of course if it is under warranty KA will fix. If you are near an authorized repair center you could take it to them the part and labor to fix $165.00 if motor, $80.00 if they have to replace the board. If you are adveterous you can DIY.

Any time an electrical motor burned out, a smoke clound come out and a very unpleasant smell come out. If you did not anticipate the above then look for problem elsewhere.

Your mixer may still be good, let it cool down and then check it out, If it runs OK then there is no problem. The motor in your mixer probably over heated from trying to mix bread dough which will make any mixer work hard. These mixers will get warm when over worked but unless heavy smoke was coming out and you were getting a burning enamel smell it is probably OK. Let it cool and try it but I suggest you not use it for bread any more.

This could be simply tha thte motor brushes have worn down. Undo the black plastic caps and compare the length to the image here

I wouldn't turn it on again , if the switch is smoking then for all practical purpose;s the brush;s are nearly shot as well. I would look around the good will thrift shops or a Salvation Army Store you ;ll find a nice one there for less than a repair bill. You never know what you will find there. Have fun hunting.. See my posts on removing the motor cover. DO NOT USE this mixer if it smoked. Something needs to burn to cause smoke. I doubt you can fix this without new parts.

there is a kit on ebay for both 701 and 901 kenwoods requires use of soldering iron do a search for Kenwood motor repair it is unlikely to be the motor usually the speed contoller components

The gearbox grease has separated and is starting to move (slowly) onto the motor armature area through the front bearing. Replace the grease and since it will be apart, use a lot of cloth strips (NO Q-TIPS! TOO STRINGY - LEAVES A MESS) and alcohol to clean off the motor's armature, housing area and any place you see grease slung around. It's not going to be easy, but worth it. I will try to post pictures as I am doing this right now 12/28/17 to my wife's Kitchenaid for this exact reason.The first image is the gear side of the motor bearing, where the thinning grease is moving through. The second image is a shot of the armature of the motor where the brushes touch and will smoke if grease gets that far (it does). The third image is a cleaned out armature area (brushes removed and speed switch moved)The last is the pooled oil separated and sitting just behind the gear box (where will it go if you tilt the head back?)

There is the possibility that if the mixer is 30 years old and it has never been serviced that the gasket around the gear case is leaking oil and in that case it would not be hard to get liquids on the armature or the stator as the gear grease in the transmission is vegetable base grease and it separates into liquids and solid and when the head is tilted up the failed gasket allows the separated oil to leak down and to the rear onto the mixer right onto the motor parts. It maybe nothing more that cleaning out all the old grease and re-packing and adding a new gasket.
