An activation key is a key that comes with your software to ensure that you have purchased a genuine copy. Depending on the software and how you purchased the PC as well as the age of the purchase the activation key could be located in a number of locations.
If you have a CD/DVD in a case then it is likely there will be an activation key inside the case or if the software came with a manual then perhaps on the inside of either the front or back page.
If you don't have a CD/DVD or the CD/DVD is simply in a paper envelope then look for a sticker on the PC to see if there is one that matches the software you need the key for.
If you made an online purchase then the key will likely have been emailed to you or be stored in your client software through which you made the purchase. For example in Steam if you right click a game in your library you can select to view CD key etc.
