Loud constant noise (metal on metal clicking / whirring / grinding) during spin cycle

My Whirlpool LSQ9564JQ0 was not agitating. Disassembled and replaced a broken Motor Coupler. Additionally, Agitator Dogs were wearing, so they were replaced as well. Reassembled and ran small load test cycle. Washer filled correctly (small load), agitated correctly (standard wash, water only), but when spin cycle started a loud, constant, metal on metal whirring / rapid clicking noise occurred (as if some type of metal ridges were sliding and not engaging) There does not seem to be any issue with spin speed (standard fast speed), but the noise is extremely loud. I pulled out the agitator to see if I'd misassembled. While agitator was out, I started spin cycle (no water in tub) to see if I could identify problem. I could clearly see that the metal rod where you bolt the agitator was slipping / spinning at different speed from tub. Not sure if this is a Drive Block, Basket Drive, or Clutch. My first instinct was clutch, but there does not seem to be ANY issue with spin speed or agitation cycles. Online posts seem to describe SLOW spin issues when clutch is going out. Any thoughts?

SOURCE: Agitator not turning during cycle

Well, it sounds like you've done your homework. My first suspect would have been the agitator dogs too, but you said they were fine. Another likely suspect would have been the motor coupler, but you said the washer spins during the spin cycle. If the coupler was bad the unit would fill, but wouldn't agitate or spin. Plus, it would make an awful noise. I would have also suspected a clutch assembly, but you said the wash tub can spin. Normally, when the clutch goes bad, the drum won't spin, or spins slow. Another suspect could have been a bad lid switch, but the washer would have filled and stopped, without agitating or spinning. The only remaining suspect that I'm aware of is the gear case (transmission). Checking under the washer can give you some clues. Normally, when a gear case starts to go bad, they leak an amber colored oil. You may find puddles or drips under the washer. If you see no signs of oil the gear case could still be defective, however. But, before you go through all the trouble, double check the agitator one more time. Completely remove it from the tub and check the under side to ensure the grooves that grip the top of the gear case shaft have not been worn smooth. I hope this may have been some help to you.

SOURCE: No agitator action

I need to get the model of the washer. (e.g. 123.123456789). This will greatly help to identify the problem and a fix for the washer. Thanks

SOURCE: Whirlpool stylemaster 4217141 REV A Agitator/spin cycle broken upper agitator spins by hand but tub won't spin

open the lid and get a model #, sound like all you need is agit dogs # 80040. then remove top of the agitator, could be a softener dispenser. under that you will find a plastic cap, pull up with needle nose pliers. under that you will find a 7/16 or 1/2 bolt, remove the bolt and the agitator can be lifted off. the agitator can now be split into to pieces, turn the top half over and the assy with the agit dgs will fall out. simply replace and reassemble and DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN BOLT. just snug it up. should be fine.

I have a whirlpool estate top load washer and the agitator spins in only one direction and wraps all the clothes around itself. It makes a loud metallic grinding noise during the wash cycle. Not sure which...

It needs a new gearbox and clutch. It's not really the sort of job you can do yourself. The gearcase is $252, and the clutch is $51. Time for a new Whirlpool front loader. Mine is just as big and uses a tenth of the water and electricity.

Noisy during agitate cycle whirlpool washer

Originally posted as solution to Kenmore 24992300 failure to agitate and loud whirring noise during spin cycle.... Hope this helps:

The problem as I noticed it was that the washer would start making a super high-pitched and very loud whirring noise during the spin cycle, and that when I would open the lid, the drum would not be spinning, but when I would close the lid, the drum would start spinning. I was okay with this during that load but after reading here and taking it apart, I realized what had happened:

The agitator dogs are supposed to have a 3-toothed profile on each one, but they become worn over time due to being made of a soft plastic. The dogs should "throw out" into an inner ring gear during normal operation, turning the entire drum. But when they became worn enough to slip, they would still throw out, grinding them at very high speed into the inner ring gear. Since they are made of a softer plastic than the gear, they were just getting more and more worn.

I assume the way this was supposed to fix itself was that when the outer tooth on the dog became worn, the next one would engage, but that didn't happen.

Because the dogs are made of such a soft plastic, I was able to cut a new tooth profile into each one, so that when they were put back in they would function correctly. It takes very little effort and a few minutes with an x-acto knife to cut the right profile.

I'm going to buy the replacement dogs, which being a manufacturer substitute will hopefully be made with a better tooth profile, from harder plastic, or both.

As another note, who knows how long the dogs weren't engaged correctly during agitation, causing clothes to sit without really being washed, but without the high pitched air raid siren. So probably a good idea to replace or repair them immediately, even if you can get it to work intermittently.

Whirlpool Model #: WTW4800XQ making a loud grinding noise during or at end of spin cycle. Help!

I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.

Sounds like you have a broken motor coupler. They are inexpensive. Can be a little tough to replace but I can walk you through it. You can purchase a coupler here.
