Why does the belt keep breaking on my kirby

I have replaced the belt on my kirby twice. It keeps breaking. It is almost as though the pulley keeps getting too hot and melting it in half. Am I putting the belt on incorrectly or could it be something else?

Odds are that the problem is not with the belt or the pulley, but with an agitator (rotating brush) that isn't turning freely. Remove the rotating brush and check to see that it spins freely. If not, you would either need to disassemble it (removing the end caps) to see if removing whatever hair / diebris is stuck between the end caps and the body of the agitator, and if that doesn't cause free rotation, then it means your agitator bearings are likely bad which means you will need to replace the agitator assembly.

I replaced the belt on my 1978 Kirby 3CB shampooer and it keeps coming off the spindle of the vacuum? The shampooer attachment is not that old and hasn't been used much. Everything is clean too.

From my memory of a Kirby I had in the early 80s the belt has a twist in it. It has do go on the right way. One way pulls it on, and the other throws it off due to the rotation of the motor shaft.

The belt keeps coming off

A belt will come off for several reasons.:

Wrong size or stretched... should be changed ever 3-6 months.

Misaligned pulley on brush or idler pulley on 2 belt unit

Misaligned motor.. this is rare

Put in a fresh matching genuine belt and keep a spare handy. Belts stretch and slip long before they break

I HAVE A KIRBY AND IT KEEPS BREAKING AND BURNING BELTS.

Hello, Check this guide to be sure that your brushroll is in correctly. Follow it step-by-step and it should help of your brushroll spins freely. If it doesn't, there are new brushrolls available through the links in the guide as well.

As long as it is Kirby belt - you should be fine. Make sure that the shaft is clean and that you do not vacuum something greasy or wet (grease or oil will lubricate the belt and shaft will loose the grip -heat up and burn). Make sure that brush roll spins freely.
I am assuming you know how to put the nozzle on properly (if you not sure - go here)

I CAN'T REPLACE THE BELT ON THE CLASSIC III (KIRBY). CAN YOU HELP ME? ELAINE
Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The belt install on a Kirby is to raise the height adjustment to the highest level and then dial the belt off counter clockwise so it is loose and not on the fan pulley, release the top lever on the bell housing, then remove the bottom plate and unhook the brushroll on one side, slide the old belt off and then slide the new one on, replace the brushroll with the screws facing the carpet and re-hook the bottom plate on the Kirby. Then take the bell housing and hook that back on to the Kirby and lock it down. Then dial the belt on clockwise all the way and the belt should be on the fan pulley. The belt should be ready to go, plug in your Kirby and then do the step down on the vacuum height adjustment until the tone changes, then try to see id it picks up, if not go one more height adjustment and that should be the correct setting.

I don't know how to change the brush. HELP Kirby Legend II vacuums

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. To change the Kirby brushroll is to dial the belt off of the fan pulley and unlock the head to the bell housing, the head will come off. Then you turn the head over and remove the bottom plate by 2 levers the brushroll will be attached. Remove the brushroll and replace it with the new one with the screw head facing down to the carpet. Replace the bottom plate and install a new belt.

Kirby Heritage 84

I can't figure out how to get the belt engaged on my Kirby Heritage 84. There are very simple instructions on the front assembly; however, the belt doesn't engage with the rotor, and the beater bar does not spin. When I have the front twisting section on the "Belt On" setting, it seems as though it actually disengages the belt. I see no faults in any of the mechanical parts, but just can't get the belt to go on the rotor.
(I purchased this machine @ a garage sale on Saturday. It's in perfect condition.)
My vacuum cleaner is a Kirby 84 Legend.
Help! Jennifer

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. You can always check your owner’s manual but the Kirby has a dial on the front of the machine and you needs to dial the belt off of the fan pulley counter clock wise and to check to see if the Kirby bell housing will release @ the top so that you can remove the bell housing. If not then remove the bottom plate and take out the brushroll on one side and then slide the belt off of the brushroll. Then you can slide the new belt onto the brushroll to the center and then re-insert the Kirby brushroll with the screw heads facing downward then you can replace the bottom plate – then use the Kirby spoon or hook to dial the belt onto the fan pulley clock wise. Once that is done then plug in the Kirby and try to vacuum to see if the Kirby is picking up properly, if not repeat the process. If you have a question, feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Vacuum keeps burning up belts Comment by campoclan, posted on May 02, 2008
I have a Kirby Sentra and have had problems since I bought it a few years ago with burning up belts. I go through at least two a month. What is wrong with it? I keep the roller clean each time I vacuum.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Some Kirby vacuum in the brushroll have bushings and some have bearings and the bushing bind up and do not spin properly and I suggest to replace your brushroll with a genuine Kirby belts and brushroll of which would work the best for you performance wise. A suggested belt change depending on carpet can be every 3 to 4 months or 4 to 6 months and the brushroll when needed, some carpets are ******* the belts and they do require change more frequently. The rest should be fine. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions
