Have tried all input connections on my new Sony receiver and my old Technics turntable SL-1500 has no sound. Was told at Best Buy that there may be an adapter to make the connection work.
Unfortunately, a turntable runs on a different frequency, and if there is no button at the back of your receiver to change the frequency setting on that channel, it wont give you any sound. the best bet is to go to your music store and purchase a small DJ mixer. connect that to your receiver, and run the turntable through your mixer. the mixer will have the neccesary flip switches and "ground" connections
Previous post is pure ****. A phone cartridge is a low output device that requires a phono input to your receiver or amplifier. In addition, a phono input applies an RIAA "curve" which is an equalization curve designed to help keep noise in the higher frequencies to a minimum. The records apply the inverse to the curve when they are mastered and pressed so the inverse curve is needed to result in a flat response. I do not know your Sony receiver and didn't bother to look it up. If there is no "phono" input, it is not designed to take a direct input from your turntable/cartridge and will not work. In that case, you will need an external phono preamp and can put the output of that into any aux type input. The preamp will supply the gain and curve needed for proper operation. I might suggest a $50 unit from ART that will do the job. If you're a real serious audiophile, you would want a much more serious preamp which can range up to $3,000 these days. With even the most modest setup, you may be amazed at what is hiding on that vinyl compared to many of today's digital formats. Good luck.
