Generator will not stay running

I have a B&S 15,000 Watt Home Gen. We have been out of power and the generator has been running for about 60 hours then it shut off (suspect overload demand). The generator blinking light fault indicated 5 blinks(frequency) and also 4 blinks (wont restart). I switched off the off/automatic toggle switch on the generator and it does restart, then shut off after 20 seconds...it repeats this about 5 times before faulting. During the restarting for 20 seconds the light come on so the transfer switch appears to work. How do I reset this to run continuously?

The toggle switch automatically resets all faults when it is turned to the off position. I would turn the toggle switch off, turn off the breaker on the generator and then turn off all the loads in the house except a few lights. Turn the generator breaker back on, then turn the toggle switch back to automatic. If it starts and stays running, you were overloading the generator. Turn on other loads slowly and keep track of what is on so you don't overload it again. If it still does not stay on, you may have a problem with the panel. Let me know what happens.

Testimonial: "Thanks OldFatGuy; I did exactly as you recommended; shut the toggle off, shut the breaker off and shut all breakers off inn my house...it took about 10 tried but it stayed running; then as I loaded it up. I noticed given certain combinations it shut off...like Hot H20 and furnace so I guess I will alternate. Any idea why it used to run everything and now it overloads? Is it on the engine side (like Gov.) or electrical. Anyway I can deal with this for now. I thank you, my family thanks you. Cam b"

SOURCE: Hello,

These units are equipped with a low/no oil shutdown. When you hold the switch over to start it, it overrides the shutdown interlock until the unit builds oil pressure in the engine. When you release the switch to the run position the interlock is engaged. Ensure there is sufficient oil in the crankcase, check the wiring from the oil pressure switch to the ignition cutout-(it may have been pulled off or damaged). If that checks out, then either jump across the 2 wires at the oil sending unit or disconnect the harness from the sending unit to test to see if the sending unit is bad. Try both unless you know the switch is normally open or normally closed. Replace the sending unit if needed.

SOURCE: frequency adjustment or solution

Can you check the RPM of the engine? 3600 RPM = 60 HZ. If it is running around that speed, try a different frequency meter.

If it was producing 180 HZ, it should automatically shut down and show a fault code!

Dometic AC B59516.711 15,000 BTU, while on generator power the AC works during day while it hot but once the sunsets and it cools down, compressor kicks on it drags the gen down and shuts it off.

something else besides the ac is stopping ( overloading) the genset
if it works well during the day, the compressor has to be working so the ac is not the problem
a 4000 watt gen set has a duty cycle load of around 3000 watts full time so any additional power requirement besides the ac will overload it
electric stoves , microwave ovens , hot water elements , anything that consumes power after dark will when combined with the ac will overload and shut down the gen-set

Pramac any ideas why is my Pramac S12000 3 Phase Generator is only producing 26 volts. It was working fine at the full 400 yesterday. It is just over 2 years old but has only operated for about 40 hou

The first thing I would look for would be internal fuses blown. This sounds like a 460 volt 12,000 watt industrial generator and you probably should call the installing contractor for service. My 15,000 watt generator is over 30 years old and has less than 700 hours on it and those are mostly test-run hours.

These type of gens have a low oil shutoff. Check the oil. Always have spare spark plugs, a cheap fix. My gen always wanted a new plug every year. Look to see if it has a fuel filter.

I have a Briggs and Stratton 7000 watt propane generator. When running this morning after two hours, it quit. It starts back up for about three seconds or so then quits again. I put a new tank on...

does this engine have a low oil shutdown unit on it

if so check the oil level an top it up it could be interupting ignition

be sure your tanks are full and connections are good and tight
brush soapy water around connections to see if any have a leak

if not oil level shutdown , then sounds like a fuel problem

suggest have a gas serviceman take a look

these units can be tricky to solve

Installed a 20K gen to run 5 ton a/c and a couple of small appliances and well pump, After electrician left a circuit board burnt up in the a/c. Any ideas?

A couple of things, there could have been a problem with the connection (transfer switch) or if your underpowering the unit (C air takes a lot of juice to run) you can also fry the circuits as well. Too little power can do just as much damage as too much power. make sure the load of the Gen is sufficient to run all your devices based on whats running all at a time. if your Gen is only ment to run 60% of the house and you have 80% of it running you ca do damage to your electrics as well as the generator. have your electrician come back out and inspect/account for his work.

Unit shuts down from overspeed fault unit has 35 hours total run time never ran more than 2 hours 45 minutes rest is excerise time . is this problem with the 15 kw common ?

The engine throttle control is out of adjustment. It needs to be set based on the generator frequency
(60 Hz).

Stops and starts

Hi there,
Most home standby generators are setup to run once a week so as to keep the engine lubed up and the generator windings dry. So if yours is comming on once a week at about the same time and running for something like 15 minutes, that's what is going on.
On the other hand, if your generator is starting and the switch is transferring somewhat randomly, you could have a problem with the neutral connection in your system, the power could really be going out and coming back on, and/or the control board in your generator could be broken.

Regards,
Carl
