Cannot share my cable modem connection

Hello, I have a comcast cable modem connection. I am trying to share this connection using the linksys 10/100 workgroup switch between my PC and my Sony PS3. I have them both hooked up but the ps3 cannot get onto the internet. The lights are all blinking but the ps3 wont get an ip address or something. I don't know if you can help me but some feedback would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

You need to connect a router to the cable modem.  The router then gets an IP address from Comcast and provides a gateway between the computers connected to the router.
The modem expects to communicate with a single Ethernet device, and provides an IP address to the first device that provides a piece of data called a MAC address.  By placing a router in-between, the router gets the IP address that lets you communicate on the Internet.  It provides local IP addresses to the equipment connected to the local Ethernet and "routes" those to the Internet.  You can either hook your two devices into the router if it has enough ports, or hook you switch to the router and hook your PC and PS3 into the switch.

I HAVE A NEW HP DESKTOP AND AN OLD LINKSSY WIRELESS G

Hi Vivian,

Chweck you cables and where they are conencted.

You will need to make sure that the Comcast modem is providing internet, you can do this by connecting your laptop to it using ethernet directly if it connects to the internet, that will be a good thing.

From your comcast Modem, the ethernet Cable should go to the linksys where it says "WAN". this should give you an internet connection and make your comcast modem communicate with your linksys Router.

Dell XP 200 Dimension ethernet port

Hello.

I'd suggest testing with another computer and the same Ethernet cable to your modem to see if the results are the same and to narrow down which component is the problem.

Was it always slow with this setup or did something change.

Is the Linksys adapter connected via USB ? That would be slower than an internal adapter.

Try updating the Linksys adapter software - Device Manager - rightclick - update driver.

Hope these suggestions help.

DHG535-2 and LAN switch issue

It sounds like the LInksys that they replaced was also a router. A router will route packets to multiple pc's that are connected to it. The cable modem just sees the router as 1 pc. When you use a switch, the cable modem will see all of your PC's. and Comcast just allows 1 pc. You will need to buy a router to use more than 1 PC which will be cheaper than using Comcasts Home Networking service which will network up to 4 pcs

Internet connection problems

Sorry but that seems to be a pretty convoluted explanation. Here is how it should go.
Vonage unit connected to phone line(s) and cable modem. Linksys connected to Vonage box. Computers connected to Linksys.
Ethernet has a length limitation of about 300 feet before you need another switch (hub) or a repeater. Does your wire length exceed this?

Connection

Hi Susie
With related to your particular issue it seems like that your broadband modem is not configured for the router. There are basically 2 types of connection. DSL and Cable modem. Verizon, ATT are DSL and comcast other providers give you a normal cable broadband connection. If its comcast make sure the cable from the comcast modem is going to the internet port in the linksys router and also make sure that there is a system connection the linksys router and the cable from the system goes to any of LAN 1, 2, 3 and 4 ports. Then reset your cable modem by using a pin and inserting to the reset hole in the modem. You could use the same step to reset your linksys router as well .If its a verizon or dsl connection you need to put normally your username and password in the router page. here is the link to how to configure linksys for your internet modem.
Here is a video as well on it?

Also post the linksys router model. your ISP modem model number and also information on how many systems are wired to the router and wireless and let me know if you need more help.

Linksys SPA2102 interfearing with winmx/360 sharepro, frequently resetting connection

If your planning to connect the phone adapter behind a router make sure that the following ports are open/forwarded on the router; UDP ports 5060-5061, UDP ports 16384-32767 take note that 5060 and 5051 one are SIP ports and must be assigned to the IP address of that was assigned to by the router to the adapter or the IP that was manually configured on it.

I found a link that could help you check the setting on your linksys phone adapter

I can not get a connection to the internet

That's Ok.

Is your computer connected directly to the cable modem from comcast and what type of connection if it is?(USB or Ethernet/LAN-its look like a telephone chord for slightly larger) or are you using a router?

First thing that you need to check is the actual modem(box provided by comcast normally the brands are; arris, motorola, webstar, samsung or linksys. Make sure the LED light on the front of the modem that say's either Online/Ready/Cable/nternet is stable or solidly lit.

Go to Control Panel and look for Network and Internet or Network and Sharing Center, on the top left hand side you will find tasks, look for manage network connection and check if you have a local area connection, right click the icon and go to Status then Details. Check if you have an IPv4 IP address(58.x.x.x or 271.x.x.x or something like that) if the IPv4 show as 169.254.x.x(where x can be number s from 0 to 254) its an invalid IP or your computer is not getting any valid IP from Comcast.

Lap top not connecting to signial

Yes you can reconnect your router. Whoever did that at Comcast had no business doing that and should be reported and return their equipment back to Comcast asap. It could appear on the bill.

I have a Linksys modem on my Comcast router and it works fine. I don't let them touch it because it uses T-Zones at home service for phone use and it uses a special router to manage it since it has a sim card to run the phone line.

Vonage equipment can be used as well.

I wonder if they were trying to put their phone service onto your system?

Connecting to internet

Ok, cable (coax) comes in from wall and attaches to modem. Ethernet cable goes from modem to WAN Port of router. You may have to reboot both devices to ensure that your modem (internet service provider) assigns IP address to your router. If PC is close enough, attach new ethernet cable from one of the 4 ports on your router down to your PC's ethernet adapter. (where your modem used to plug into). Router will now assign an IP address to your PC and you should be able to access the www.

Good Luck and let me know if you have any more questions.
