Geekman thats not the problem. This issue is usually due to a Hitachi hard disk and the firmware needs to be updated. Please goto hp.com and type in your laptop it will bring you to the correct firmware update. I will agree with you on the backup part this should be a normal practice.

Back up your data frequently as the hard drive will fail soon. When the hard drive fails you need to install a new one and install Windows on the new hard drive to get a fully functioning computer again.

When i turn my compaq Evo N600c i get this message "1720 SMART hard drive detected imminent failure (failing attr : 05 ) " please help

If you want to save your data, start backing it up now!!!
That hard disk has detected bad sectors or other issues that is causing read, write or read/write failures.
The best thing to do if it's out of warranty is get a new hard disk and clone this drive to that one using a program like Acronis True Image.
Where you get the new hard disk will probably sell external enclosures or a USB adapter cable that you can use to have both hard disks hooked up at the same time to perform the drive cloning, or most computer shops if you are buying the drive from them will provide this service either free or for a modest fee.
Use the drive (meaning the laptop) as little as possible until you get a new drive into it.

Am gettin the message hard drive detects imminent failure (failing attr : 05) i've tryed changing the boot menu to boot from cd but it doesnt show to boot from cd

Your hard drive is about to crash. depending on your model computer, one of the F keys accesses the bios. That is where you will find the boot priority menu so you can change it.

1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (failing attr:05)

Is your hard drive a Hitachi/IBM? If yes, Compaqs are known for their notorious hatered toward IBM/Hitachi hard drives. It's a compatibility issue over a quarrel Compaq had with Hitachi during the late 1990es. Or you may really be dealing with a dying hard drive. In either case, you'll have to get a new hard drive... or a used one but DO NOT GET A HITACHI. Get a Seagate or Samsung. It would be best if you transfer all your critical data off the hard drive and dont use your computer untill you get a replacement hard drive.

Mi laptop write the following information when i try to start up- 1720-SMART hard drive detects imminent failure (failing Attr please back up the contents of the hard drive and run HDD self testin F10...

Smart thinks that the hard drive is in fact failing, so you need to copy all your files to CD/DVD/USB key/External Hard drive, and then replace the internal hard drive and reinstall the system.
Having said that smart has been known to continue putting up this warning for lengthy periods, so it is possible that the drive will continue for some time. If you want to risk it, just continue to use the existing drive until it fails and back up all important files as they are created.

1720-SMART HARD Drive detects immenent failure. What shall I Do?

Sounds like your hard drive is about to pack up. You can disable SMART for your hard drive in your CMOS setup. which will allow you to boot up your pc. I suggest you back-up all your data as soon as possible before the hard drive fails completely.
