My WD Elements SE External drive does not have its driver recognized on boot, but does only after repluging its USB 2.0 connection. How do I get the driver recognized on boot? Why does replugging work

I guess it's some kind of a problem with the way your USB port works. I have an external WD too, connected to a USB 3.0 port and definitivly it's not detected at boot, just after windows startup as a USB device.
After some initial wondering about this problem, I decided no to worry more because I use external drive for data backup and if it is not detected by BIOS makes no difference.
It might be a problem of an outdated BIOS or the USB port's driver. In my case, boths, BIOS and USB 3.0 are rather old.
You can do some reading about issue if you do a ggogle search for issue

I have a WD Elements 7500 using Windows 7 64 bit. The device is not being recognized. The light is on, on the device and it is plugged into the computer. I am using a Song VAIO laptop.

If the laptop detects a memory stick when plugged in then the problem is in the WD. Try it in another pc, if it's still not recognized then it has died and all the data on it is lost - junk it and buy a new one.

The only way you can check physically is to change the USB cable. The other softwares that can assist :

1. Head to WD website and download diagnostic tool that may troubleshoot the hard disk but once it is recognized.

2. Try connecting it to a different PC running Windows.

3. You can check if the HD is being detected or not in BIOS menu. If it is being detected proceed to step 1, if not then change cables. If still it is problematic then you have to contact official support from WD for this.

How can I install the driver for My Passport WD External HDD 500GB online?

It is a "plug-and-play" device, and Windows XP/Vista/7 are "plug-and-play-aware" systems.
So, just connect it, and Windows should recognize it.

My wd elements external hd is not recognized under windows 7. The pc diagnostics say that the device is working properly and the correct drivers are installed?

Go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel. Computer Management then Storage, Disk Management. You'll probably have to recognise it and assign a drive number.

The WD hard disk 160GB is not recognized after plugging into USB

It is very possible that your BIOS will not support a large hard drive. Without more information on your system it will be hard to diagnose your problem.

WD Elements USB drive not recognized

Try going to Disk Management and see if they show up there.

  1. Click Start
  2. Right Click My Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Disk Management
If your computer is recognizing a mass storage device they should show up in disk management and you can just assign them a drive letter.
