The software technology used to decoded the format used by DVD's is owned, and has to be purchased in order to decode and playback the content. Hardware manufactures already have paid for this license for your "on-the-shelf-dvd player". You have another option... to download a DVD Player that includes a pre-licensed decoder.

Then, open the program called "Media Player Classic" that the mentioned codec pack will install.

That means the media player that you use cannot decode DVDs and you need to download a piece of DVD player program that can decode DVDs.

That's going to be a software error. Basically just letting you know that it has no idea how to play the file. Might need to upgrade to the latest Media Playerif you're trying to actually play a movie, or just disable autoplay to get rid of the message entirely

You'll need a decoder from a program like cyber dvd or win dvd. Nero also has one and sonic too. If the drive came with a dvd player program install it. You can also find them through windows media player at microsoft's website but they will cost a few bucks. Search the internet for dvd player software you may find one for free. I hope this helps you. If you are like me you might have a program in your pile of software cds'.

u need DVD decoder like PowerDVD or WinDVD to play the DVD. first transfer the DVD movie into someother media which ur system can read like external hard disc, and watch the movie with the Decoder u have installed in ur system

Little known public issue...not all DVD's are playable in all DVD drives. DVD's can be recorded in what is know as + (plus) - (minus) single and double formats. The message says that your DVD player cannot understand the DVD that you put in the player. It may play on other players. See the Wikipedia article on DVD formats at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD
