SOURCE: shut off while pressure washing

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Most likely the JET orfice in the bottom of the carburator venturi throat is clogged. I am assuming you have a 5.5 Hp Honda motor but even if it is not the procedure is the same.

1. Turn off the fuel supply selector

2. Remove the float bowl by taking out the mounting hardawre. The nut / cap screw on the very bottom of the float bowl has holes in it. Make sure they are clean.

3. Remove the "Brass" JET from the bottom venturi tube and clean the orifice. You should see a pinhole of light through the hole when it is clean.

4. Remove the venturi tube just above the jet that is also brass. The throat of the venturi tube and the 2 side holes must be clear.

5. Use something like a spray paint can lid to catch fuel and then briefly turn on the fuel supply. The fuel should flow at a good rate though the float needle and seat assy. GENTLY lift the float to the raised positon (level) and confirm fuel stops. Then loet it lower again noting fuel flow. TURN OFF THE FUEL selector. If you do not get any fuel at this point check the bottom of the fuel tank for obstructions at the tank outlet hole. Once you have verified fuel flow.

6. Reinstall the venturi tube

7. Reinstall the jet

8. Reinstall the float bowl making sure upper and lower gaskets are in place.

9. Turn on the fuel and wait one minute (check for leaks)

10. Start the unit.....

(Complete)

Thanks for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Northstar PW shuts off hot if washer is moved. Honda engine

Being petrol driven, it may have a mercury kill switch which puts a ground on the ignition circuit stopping the engine if you move it. Perhaps for safety in case you overturn the unit somehow.

Portercable Pressure Washer Model PCH2401

when the trigger for the wand is not pulled , there is a pressure relief valve that bypasses the water in the pump and so there is no pressure until the trigger is pulled again.
with the pump getting hot and not being able to pull the motor to restart, it indicates that that pressure relief valve has jammed ( faulty ) and the pump is running at full pressure all the time
That will heat the pump and stop the engine from restarting
That valve is where I would start looking for a problem

Runs good shut off for a few minutes restart runs terrible engine spits and sputters

A bad fuel pump may cause a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9l to run for a few minutes and just shut off without sputtering. It can also be that the fuel pressure regulator (on top of fuel pump assembly) is stopped up. Dodge Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year three times.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Deere 3300 PSi pressure washer shutting off while in use.Everything appears fine Oil level,Gal level,Air cleaner ok etc.. May run 2 minutes or 12 minutes then spudders a bit then Bang "Off" as if i...

John Deere will replace the cap for free; they acknowledge the vendor who supplied Briggs & Stratton gas caps provided faulty caps. Call 1-888-228-3068 then 1 (English), 2, 1 and a technician will ask you for model number and Serial Number (which they need to replace the cap). Don't drill a hole in your cap: debris will find a way into the gas tank and end up possibly fouling the engine. Bob from NJ

My sku 509560 has begun to stop and then restart after 15 minutes or so? It them runs for 10 minutes and stops again. Is it fixable?

Yes, it can be fixed.Assuming that your water system is pressurized, take the following steps;
1. Shut the power off the lines going to the pump
motor.
2. Drain all the water inside the pressure tank by
opening the drain plug. After emptying the tank,
replace the drain plug.
3. Unscrew the priming port plug and fill it full with
water. And at the same time fully close the
flow control valve.
4. Put the power back on, and slowly open the
flow control valve until the water flow stabilize at
20 or 30 psi at the pressure gage. This could be
at 1/4 open or 1/3 open, depending on the water
supply at the suction point.
5. Check and set the pressure switch to be off
at 40 psi.
This will solve your problem.

2-yr old troy-bilt pressure washer with honda gcv160 engine. seems to run well, but when trigger is pulled get full pressure for less than 5 seconds before reducing to house water pressure. when left...

It sounds like an air lock. Try this: With the machine off, connect the hose to the washer and let it run for several minutes to get all of the air out of the hose, and to purge any air out of the pump. Shut off the water, and connect the high pressure hose, but not the gun. Let the water run for several minutes. stretch out the HP hose and make sure that the air is displaced. Shut off the water, connect the gun, and purge as before. Now crank it washer up. As quickly as safe to do so, open the trigger to keep water moving through the washer. It should come up on pressure very quickly. It is better during normal operation to keep water moving through the system. When I am through for a while, I shut down my washer, but leave the trigger depressed to allow the pump to stay full of water, and cool. This prevents further problems when I restart it.
Hope this was useful.

Pressure Washer Pump and Engine Stops Suddenly

The pump might be binding against the motor, causing the pump to overheat and temporarilly "seize up" and shut the engine off.
After cooling down for a brief period (5~10 mins) the engine can usually be re-started, but the overheating problem will keep coming back.

This happens when the pump either wasn't seated against the engine properly during it's initial instalation, or the pump housing wasn't machined properly and the PTO shaft is trying to drive the pump at a slight angle = excessive friction = overheating.

Try this:
1) Loosen the bolts that mount the pump to the engine just enough so that the pump can be wiggled slightly.
2) With the engine power switch in the "OFF" position, slowly pull the recoil starter rope so that the engine / pump completes about two revolutions. This helps to align the pump surface with the engine.
3) Lightly snug the pump mounting bolts in a criss-cross pattern, then slowly pull the recoil starter rope again to ensure that the pump isn't binding.
4) Finish tightening the pump mounting bolts in the criss-cross pattern (approx. 21 foot pounds torque).

The entire process should take you roughly about 10 mins from start to finish.

If this doesn't remedy your problem, then try running the engine for 20 mins with the pump COMPLETELY removed so as to isolate the components.
