Yes, you can play DVD movies on TV, you need the tuner if you want to see broadcasted channels.Your universal remote should have codes for Mitsubishi Rear Proj. Tv's. If you dont have the instructions with the remote , call the manuf. Good luck!

SOURCE: mitsubishi 1080 series// grey box appears when playing dvds

first you may need to get the original remote control (290P123010)

check input selection on television, and cable connections as they may have been loosened. refer to tv owner's manual for proper channel/input selection for dvd players. depending on age of tv, it may be channel 3 or 4 or it could be component1 or s-video etc, depending on how you have it connected.

Rolling picture and blue screen

According to my Satellite provider tech support. More and more channels are being encoded so that recording equipment cannot capture the signals to prevent piracy. I know the premium channels use this technique now. I would call and ask tech support if there is any copy restrictions in place that would affect your VCR recording before doing any further trouble shooting on the VCR. If you can play pack a prerecorded movie fine with your VCR then it should also record fine. Also try watching the channel through the VCR tuner and I bet you will see the same pattern. The VCR can only record the signal it is given.

Hope this helps you,
Ron

yes it could ba the cable itself even, but i suspect more the tuner circuit or tuner itself may have bad solder connections. Here is another test for you to try, plug another dvd or vcr, or xbox etc. into the back, using one odf the inputs. See if this works like the built in dvd. if so it will be more likely bad connections in the tuner or surrounding circuit. good luck.
