I suppose that your system requires an active subwoofer, and that you provide one. Some systems, if SPEAKER SIZE in SETUP are set to LARGE for front or center speakers, do not send signal to sub, system redirect signal to front or center speaker. Try to check this.

What cable connects a Dell PC to a Harmon Kardon HK395 sub woofer?

3.5 m/m. Normally it is color coded green. The pink connects the subwoofer to the speakers. Any color will work. Just mark both ends of wire jacks.

My Definitive Technology Supercube ii subwoofer is not powering on. I've checked the electrical outlet so it's not that. I suspect it might be a problem with my subwoofer cable but I don't want to take...

Unfortunately, the most common problem with powered sub woofers, including definitive technology, is that the capacitors inside dry out. To check the speaker, you can connect any line level audio source (like an mp3 player) to the speaker and see if it comes on. If it does come on, then you will know the speaker is ok. If not, then the speaker will need servicing. Powered sub woofers are not usually a DIY project.

Recheck your wiring and instructions. If your woofer is self powered perhaps the amp is no good. Actually it better have amps since the laptop output will not power those speakers.

Sound faliure

If the subwoofer has its own power cord seperate from the rest of the audio system, the internal amplifier could be fried or u have a loose connection inside the box

Woofer assistance

You need to buy an active (self-amplified) subwoofer. Attach it to the Subwoofer Preout connector.

Go into Speaker Setup (SP SYS/SETUP Button near upper right side of Op Panel) and follow the prompts.

The parameter we're most interested in is the question "Subwoofer Yes" or "No".

Some guidance when selecting speaker parameters for the rest of the channels:

SMALL vs LARGE: This has nothing to do with size so much as it deals with the BASS handling capacity of the speakers. If you say SMALL, most low frequencies from those channels will be re-routed from them to the Subwoofer. If you say LARGE the channels will still get the low frequencies they deserve.

I imagine you would be able to answer LARGE for all of your speakers.

Even if you have all LARGE speakers defined the Sub will still have work to do as it will be dealt the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) from encoded movies and all or most of the content below certain frequencies.

Connection of a subwoofer to Yamaha ZX-V490

Get a powered sub-woofer that has speaker level inputs, then run your front speaker wires into the sub-woofers speaker level input and then run a set of speaker wires from the sub-woofers speaker wire output to your front speakers. This is a common way to use a sub-woofer with a receiver that doesn't have a sub-woofer output.

Most powered sub-woofers have these connections, just check it out first before you buy one. They look like speaker jacks on the back of the receiver.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Installation Help

This means that you have purchased a three piece home theatre system. Two tweeters and a sub-woofer. Assuming you are using a Stereo player (Tape/CD/DVC)you have to connect the Left Output of the Stereo placer to the Left Input at the back of the Sub-Woofer and the Right output to the Right input of the subwoofer by cables. Then take tweeters and connect them to Right speaker and Left speaker output at the back of the sub-woofer ( note if the speakers are marked L/R, then connect them to the subwoofer output accordingly. In case you are using a 5.1 player, then only connect the front right and front left to the Right and Left input at the back of the subwoofer. You are and you can now start playing your music or movies and and you will get theatre quality sound.
