My mother's capresso C1500 reads "Tray Missing" when we turn it on - even though the tray is not missing. I have turned it on and off, removed tray, cleaned it, put back in. Checked for jammed grounds - all clear. I can see where there is a little white sensor which should trigger the Tray Missing error to turn off but when I reach in with a pencil to move it, the error does not change. Is the sensor dirty? I can't see how I could possibly get in there to clean it without taking the whole machine apart. Any suggestions?
The "sensor" is most likely a micro-switch. When the tray is in it actuates the switch and closes a circuit indicating to the controller that the tray is in place. Sorry to tell you this but it will have to be disassembled to replace the switch if it has failed as the micro-switches are usually sealed items that are not normally cleaned.

Insert the tray-all of it except the grounds container. The message disappears and you can wait until the machine continues it's cycle and then asks to empty the tray. Empty the tray and place the grounds container back inside. Whew, I've done this a few times over the years when I am rushing but it fixes it every time.

If the machine says TRAY MISSING it's the contacts at the back so clean as other people have stated, you can also use a cardboard nail file to clean the contacts at the back if there really skanky!.
If the machine keeps saying EMPTY GROUNDS even though you have, pull out the tray, look just inside the aparture where the tray goes top right at the front there is a small slot where if you look closely you can see a small white micro switch. This will be probably gunged up with coffee and the switch will be stuck up, get a can of WD40 and squirt a small amount up into the switch then poke the switch with a small screwdriver up and down until it moves smoothly.
Then replace all the bits, sit down, look smug and have a coffee cos you've fixed it!! :0)

Clearly, the drip tray is not aligned right, or there is a manufacturing flaw. Simple answer would be to examine the part of the tray that you believe is supposed to engage the switch when it is in place, and try to figure out why it is not doing this.
Personally, if you are like me and don't mind voiding a warranty, I'd suggest removing the switch so the machine always thinks the tray is in place.
SOURCE: I have a Jura impressa C5, and drip tray will not
I have a Jura Impressa 27. The tray, for some odd reason, was not going back in. I simply tried it without the top part - that receives the grounds - and was finally able to get it in. I pulled it back out and found some grounds that had been dumped. It seems something was stuck that wouldn't allow it back in with the top part. Then after I was able to put both pieces back in without a problem.
