I'm trying to hook up my vcr to my digital box and tv. I think that I have the connections right but when I try to record a tv channed it doesn't record. What am I doing wrong? Or how do I hook up my connections? This is how I have the connections hooked up: I have the coax cable to the digital box marked RF In. Then I have another coax cable in the To TV/VCR on the digital box to the top plug in marked UHF/VHF on the vcr. Then I have another coax cable on the vcr marked to TV.

That will depend upon what you want to do. If you plan to record to the VCR from the cable box, then the cable box will need to directly connect to the VCR, then the output of the VCR is connected to the TV. Unfortunately, most VCRs are analog, not digital, so you will lose HD capability (if you have it) trying to connect this way. You also cannot record one show while watching something else (you will need to be tuned to the channel you are recording). If you want to simply use the VCR to view recorded tapes, then connect the cable box to the TV as per the cable company recommendations, and then make a second connection for the VCR. Of course, your TV will need appropriate and available jacks on the rear to do this. It is difficult to give specifics without knowing the models of the cable box, VCR, and TV.

I don't think the VCR has a digital tunner so you will need a second box for that unless the box to your TV has a twin digital tunners. If the switchover has taken place in your area the VCR will not have a picture to record. Without knowing how you have all 3 connected I can't tell you much more.

Try this. You will need 2 RF cables and a RCA cable that has a red, black, and yellow plug on each end.

1. Plug the antenna signal into the converter box.
2. Connect the RF output (TV out) of the converter box to the RF input on the VCR
   
3. Connect the RF output (TV out) on the VCR to the TV
   
4. Finally, plug the DVD recorder into the converter box also, but use the 3 RCA cables that came with it (audio left, right and video).
   

If I understand your request right, You do not have cable or satellite box.
You can not record from your TV. You use the TV as a monitor from the dvd/vcr combo box. What the box receives is what shows on the TV. So you will have to have a digital convertor hooked to the (antenna in) dvd/vcr combo box, (antenna out to the tv antenna in) Depending on the antenna you are using that is on the other end of your cable-in coax connection this will hook to your antenna in on the digital convertor box. If your cable is hooked up and operating correctly and directly to the tv that is digital ready you probabbly have a good picture. When the vhf/uhf signal was transmitted you could go from the dvd/vcr to the tv with no problem. But now that the signal is digital and the tv is set for digital the dvd/vcr will not pass a digital signal to the tv. Best suggestion, you have to get a digital dvd/vcr receiver. You must have a converter box for the tv and for the vcr. Set the vcr to receive chanel 3 and set the converter box to the digital chanel you want to record. Put a splitter on the antenae out and route one to the tv converter box and one to the vcr converter box. GOOD TO GO.

I don't think it will affect the digital TV reception, but if you try to use the VCR built-in tuner it is still analog and you won't be able to record digital channels that way. If your digital TV converter has video-out and audio-out connectors, then you can connect those to the corresponding connectors on your VCR to record.

I had the same problem and found this answer that worked for me. Hope this does the trick for you.

Simple stated, your VCR must be set to channel 3 also. Check it out.

1. You must have the VCR tuned to record on channel 3.
2. You must have the VCR connected to output signal of the DTV converter box. In other words, the converter box must be connected between the antenna and the VCR. So, the likely configuration you would use with a coaxial cable is antenna to DTV converter to VCR to TV.
3. You must tune the DTV converter to the channel you want to record prior to recording. The VCR won't be able to change channels on the DTV converter.
4. You will be able to use the timed record function on the VCR but you must adhere to steps 1-3.

If this sounds freakishly familiar to recording on a digital cable or satellite set-top box, you are right. It is exactly like recording a signal from a digital cable box or satellite receiver. While it may be inconvenient to perform the steps above, at least the option still exists to record on a VCR while using a DTV converter box.
Disadvantage of DTV Converter: You will lose the ability to watch one program and record another with the DTV converter. Sorry for the bad news.
The reason is the tuner. The VCR tuner is useless with digital except for recognizing channel 3. The digital converter is a single tuner item so it only receives one station at a time.

first you do connect cable to your > combo VCR / DVD player & recorder then connect to > to your TV:
cable coax output or if that cable have video/audio ouput is going to INPUT >to combo VCR / DVD player video / audio output is going to INPUT > to TV,.that's the time you can record and playback;

you can try going from the wall to the dvd/vcr first then to the cable box then to the TV. It may find the channels but they might not be in the order you usually wouls see them i.e chan 4 may be chan 34 etc. this will only work on an analog connection, if you have digital cable box it will not work. other than that, you have to control everythng from the cable box and the dvd remains on chan 3 at all times.
