This feature is related to the tv.
The black square is an space reserve for text. Most of broadcasting companies dont use it at all. Now to evoid it you go into menu look for close caption options and make sure to send the TEXT feature to off, Again in the TV MENU. Details and information about this feature is in the user's manual, specially how to turn it off.

Would you like to unlock your Sony Playstation 2 DVD Player to Region Free?

There is more than one model of PS2, and more than one PS2 DVD player module. For some models or modules, only a Messiah 2 or Magic 2 chip installation will make them region free. However, many can be made region free, for free.

Follow these steps to unlock your Sony Playstation 2 DVD Player:

  1. Press and hold CIRCLE, RIGHT, L1
  2. Press and hold L3 and push the stick in hard
  3. Boot into the PS2 browser without a CD/DVD in the tray
  4. Press CIRCLE and R1 on the DVD
  5. Hold RIGHT until a menu appears
  6. Press CIRCLE and R1 again
OR
  1. Load the DVD into the PS2
  2. At the browser screen, select the CD icon the press and hold SQUARE then CIRCLE until the DVD menu appears, holding both buttons all of the time
  3. Either select the PLAY icon or the MOVIE START icon

Your Sony Playstation 2 DVD Player is now Region Free.

With the player in STOP mode, or without a disc inserted, press DISPLAY on the remote. Then press either the UP or DOWN arrow keys (on remote) to scroll down from LANGUAGE setup to SCREEN SETUP, then highlight the aspect ratio which best suits the connected TV, in this case 16:9 widescreen (according to the manual the default aspect is 4:3 letterbox). Once you have made the change, exit the setup. It should remember the setting you have made.

Pages 26 to 27 of the owner's manual illustrate the setup procedure for this model DVD player.

NOTE: some DVDs may be encoded as 4:3 titles, hence you will see black borders at the left and right sides of a widescreen TV. Not all DVD movies are encoded in the 16:9 aspect ratio.

However, you can check your player's setup menu just to be sure.

You may have probably turned on Closed Caption on your TV. Unhook the DVD player to find out if it disappears. If it disappears then Closed Caption is on on your TV. Turn off Closed Caption. If cannot find how, give me the brand and model of your TV.

This happens all the time, on your remote, go into the Menu and disable Closed Captions. It will go away after that.

First forget the DVD.
  • Go into menu
  • and find close caption (TURN IT OFF)
  • If you find (TEXT) TURN IT OFF
those feature specially TEXT is who creates that square. was created for original programers to allow broadcasters send signals. Is not used for anyone. that squre is the empty space to write down a note. as i said not needed there TURN IT OFF. refer to your users manual to get easiest to this area. and read more about it.

Hitachi Ultrascan HD Black square question?
If that black box is generated by Tv, it should be there all the time, like on cable, av input etc.
as you said its not always, so cable top box is suspected which can generate such box as well.
I would suggest when you see that box in tv reception, simply play dvd player and check is that box still appears on dvd input? I hope black box wont appear in playback of dvd player.
Need further help, please let me know.
